Part of the problem is that there's really nothing (so far) sympathetic about Kylo's backstory. He was raised by two parents who love him, who are willing to forgive him after all the terrible things he's done. Han even lets Kylo kill him, even though Kylo's a significant threat (compare that to how Obi-Wan handled Anakin, for example).

But so far, we don't know why Kylo turned. Because he admired his shitty grandfather? That's not enough of a reason. We know he killed the young people in Luke's school, tortured people, ordered the slaughter of a village of people for no reason, and killed his loving father.

It's tragic for Han and Leia, sure, but at the moment, Kylo himself doesn't seem all that tragic because his angst stems from the fact that he can't be evil enough. Which isn't very relatable. And he doesn't have enough backstory yet to make it compelling.

^yes. I mean, his emotional torment being that he's "not bad enough"? Given all the stuff that he's done, I'd argue he's plenty bad. And emotionally, I'm not inclined to be particularly forgiving of what he did to Han.
I don't find him uninteresting, but I do find him unsympathetic.

+1. There are crimes I can rationalize away in a fictional villain I take a shine to, but killing one of my favourite characters ever is not one of them. I think he's a good villain but I have zero sympathy for him.

Honestly, I was sort of under the impression that Han and Leia messed up. Not that they were the worst parents ever, but they weren't overly emotionally engaged, and they didn't know how to handle his dark side (heh), so they passed him off to Luke. Which obviously was a mistake.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they were horrible people who abused him and he's a misunderstood Draco in Leather Pants - I think Han and Leia probably tried, and the ends most certainly didn't justify the means. But I have a feeling it was more complicated than Ben going from a happy-go-lucky pampered boy to teh evulz.

Yeah, but they clearly love him and are willing to die for him which doesn't suggest that they were bad parents. I mean, we can speculate that they "weren't overly emotionally engaged" but there's no evidence for that in the film and the rest of their behavior points to them loving him unconditionally and willing to sacrifice everything for him. Which doesn't at all suggest that they were bad parents.

Hence, it's difficult to find his situation sympathetic. At least, as of now. The sequels may alter this.

I have seen a lot of variations on that theory. I can't decide if I am too old to accept "it's his parents' fault" without a lot more evidence, or if it's just that I've been a fan of Han and Leia for nearly forty years so I am already on their side.

nayrt, but for me it's simply a matter of no evidence whatsoever, either from the film itself or from the original trilogy's characters' behavior to this point.

We know he killed the young people in Luke's school

We actually don't know this. Han only says that an apprentice (that everyone is assuming is Kylo Ren) betrayed Luke and "destroyed" everything Luke had built.

I thought the reason he turned was meant to be something you wondered about that would be revealed in the sequels. Same as with why Rey's so awesomely super special.

"Raised" is actually being speculated on here. We don't know how old Ben was when Leia sent him with Luke. He may have been really young, so he could be harboring some resentment to his parents for not really being there, but he resents Han more so.

Which also makes me wonder how old he was when Snoke first started to "groom" him for the darkside...was he with Luke or was he still at home with Han and Leia?

I think the general estimation of at which age Kylo killed the other Jedi apprentices is 15-ish, based on Rey's age when she was left on Jakku (she's about 4 then, 19 in TFA, Kylo is ~30 in TFA).
Leia mentions them being aware of Snoke for a while before that but not being aware of the influence he had on Ben, so yeah, the probability that Snoke's influence started a while before Ben was 15 and Leia and Han apparently were aware of him (in which way is unknown though).
