(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)I too got the feeling that while Han and Leia loved him and did their best, they may not have always been very present in his life. That doesn't excuse anything he's done, but it could have helped to screw him up. Plus, how much pressure would he have been under? The (only?) child of two of the Rebellion's greatest heroes. The Last Jedi's nephew. In TFA he keeps talking about wanting power and needing to be strong, I'm willing to bet that's part of where that came from.
Finally, something that's in the tie-in novels but not the movie so I hope they do address it: Snoke's influence. Apparently he started watching and invading Ren's mind since he was three. Guiding his thoughts and his growth. If that's the case, Kylo Ren didn't have much more choice in the matter than your average Stormtrooper.
