Book club

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-02-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
So I made a post the other day about trying to start up book club again, and it got some interest. Gonna put it out there a couple more times to try to catch as many people as possible. Any interest in doing a book club again? Also, if you are interested, what are some things you might rec as our next book to read? If we get enough interest, I'll put up a book poll around the beginning of next month and we'll read our first book in April.

Also, if you are interested, what are some things you might rec as our next book to read?

It might make it easier for more people to participate if the book is freely legally available. That doesn't necessarily mean old books that are in the public domain. Rudy Rucker made his Wares series freely available on his website, and there are some other contemporary authors who have done so as well.

I don't know about restricting the book to only stuff that the authors have made available. That probably narrows it down quite a lot. People will still vote on the title they want, and in the past we've had little trouble with people being unable to get a book from a library, borrow it from someone or buy it for a few bucks used.

What do others think of this?

Also, is that a rec for Wares? (i.e. would you like me to add it to the rec list)

Yeah, I can understand how it would really restrict the choices. If people haven't had a problem finding the books before then I guess it's not an issue (which is good!).

Also, is that a rec for Wares? (i.e. would you like me to add it to the rec list)

Yes!~ Technically, I guess it should be a rec for Rudy Rucker's Software, which is the first in the series. They're all pretty self-contained, plot-wise, so I hope it being part of a tetralogy isn't a problem?

Re: Book club

Ok, I'll put Software on the recs list. And nope, not an issue at all! We've done it before actually. The book can definitely be discussed on its own and hey, it might even inspire people to read the whole series on their own.

Question: is this book also available in print? I'll still read it if it's online-only and I definitely wouldn't exclude it from the club, but I have a personal preference for printed books, so I'm curious.

Yeah, it's available in print. Most libraries should have it, and probably a lot of used bookstores have a copy, and Amazon.

I prefer the ones available for free somewhere. like baen.com or this wares author

The main reason I didn't join last time (and have dropped out of other book clubs) is because just getting the book is such a pain. I have to order it in at the library (I don't even have a library membership now), or have to buy it and wait for it to arrive so by the time it has arrived the book club is already on to the next book.

But then the alternative is to do easily sourced books in which case may have already read them?

Re: Book club

:/ I wish I could be more helpful. I don't really want to limit the books we can recommend/vote on in that way because I think it narrows the potential scope of the club pretty significantly.

We do usually pick the book 2-3 weeks before the month we read it in, which gives people a total of like 6-7 weeks to obtain and read the book after it's been decided on.

I thought you lived in Australia. Is their post that bad everywhere?? how can a developed nation get away with a postal system that runs two months behind 0___0

Re: Book club

[personal profile] caerbannog 2016-03-02 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's government owned and basically has a monopoly on post. I've been looking at alternatives like toll and austrek (for posting out) but they only do packages. Anything coming in goes through auspol.

There's been a lot of complaints lately so maybe they'll get better but i doubt it. Been getting worse over the years. I'm not even going to bother with christmas cards anymore :/

Wow that's so stupid...in the US we at least have FedEx and UPS to compete with USPS (US Postal Service, government-run) which I think incentivizes the latter to stay on top of its game to a reasonable degree.

Monopolies are the worst. :|

If someone starts one I'd probably join! But I'm just gonna stick with book club for stuff I'm running

Is this a thing where you have to have an account orrrr how does a nonny participate?
diet_poison: (Default)

Re: Book club

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-02-29 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Nope! Anons are totally welcome!

The voting for which book we read is done via survey site, so it's not an issue.

Re: Book club

Would participate.
I've Bennett reading some Caribbean fiction on assignments in my field of studies and I can recommend (with caution because I have mixed feelings about it but find it worth reading) Ceres Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo. If we're looking to expand our our range. I'd certainly be expanding mine if we read stuff from the US though because I've only ever read Stephen King and Thomas Harris...
