I don't get why people make such a big deal about "problematic" ships. It's part of the appeal to some people. I hate people trying to shame others just because they don't like it. Just let it go.

It's the current 'right thinking' climate. Does this ship tick off the thought police? If the answer is 'yes' then it is dirty, bad, wrong and must be stamped down upon hard.

It's the New Puritanism. Embrace it or be shunned.

For me it is how the shipper deals with it. I'll go with Hannibal/Will as an example, as it is a fairly extreme one.

Shipper 1: "This is such a dark and twisted relationship. I love the dynamics and speculating how they could play out."

Shipper 2: "OMG, they are so hot together! They are perfect for each other! Let me write a lot of fluffy family fic or meet cutes as AUs in a bookstore!"

I have absolutely no issue with the first kind of shipper. Exploring the dynamics of characters on the show is what headcanons and speculation and fanfiction and the like are for. I do have an issue with the second kind of shipper. As it seems like they don't care about any problematic aspects and in fact don't really care about the actual characters and their stories. As long as the characters are hot. I wouldn't shame people about it or whatever, but it does bother me.

Some people just like fluff. What's the big deal? How are they hurting you? Can you not find enough Shipper 1 fic or something?

Some people get creeped out by the people who think psychologically fucked-up cannibal serial killers are cute and fluffy. How are they hurting you? Can't find enough potential victims?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
How clever. I don't like seeing people judged as creepy or shallow or immoral or whatever else for their fic preferences, so obviously I'm a serial killer.

AYRT

Not that you are likely to see this at this late date, but...

Because that isn't who the characters are. They are very fucked up and the whole relationship is twisted and psychologically damaging. If they want a cute and fluffy ship, there are a million other characters they can write fic about. Turning a serial killer and the victim he gaslighted into said cute and fluffy fic bothers me.
