Either way, those make a modicum of sense. To mode does not.

Oh, wait. Never mind (http://i25.tinypic.com/15hycno.png). Rare/obsolete since the seventeenth century, though; that certainly explains why it doesn't make sense to us modern English speakers, doesn't it?

You have a point there. I mean, it really doesn't matter that "dragon" and "harpy" and "elf" and "leviathan" and "cyclops" and "gorgon" and "pegasus" and "unicorn" and "behemoth" and "phoenix" and "siren" and-- oh yeah, "mentor" was originally from a fantasy book, too. But stuff made up for fantasy doesn't matter, right?
