That's what it looked like to me? No one does widow's peak like Vegeta!

Can't possibly be anyone else with those hairstyles. (Bulma's...squishier than I'd imagine him to be.)

Does EVERYONE in this comm dislike gender stereotypes???? I'm almost starting to think this is like the new trendy thing to proclaim.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

I wouldn't say I "dislike" gender stereotypes per se. I mean, I dislike the FACT that these stereotypes exist because uh, duh, stereotyping is an inherently bad thing and does nothing but limit the number and diversity of stories that can be told, but I don't dislike individual characters/plotlines/relationships just because they fall into a gender stereotype.

It's just that I'm very interested in gender subversions too. And gender stereotypes are all over, but gender subversions take some effort to dig up so when I find one in fandom they feel a lot more...rewarding? Whereas finding a variation on a couple that's just another gender stereotype is kinda..."oh, here's another one on top of the pile."

Yeah, I can see how it would be frustrating if you were into gender subversions and couldn't find many fics like that to enjoy.

I'm primarily into het, and in my small fandom, most of the het is femdom or the men are excessively passive and mushy (if there's any sex at all), and as a submissive woman, I just want them to take control! So I guess I'm coming from the same place, opposite end.

It's not that I hate characters that fall into gender stereotypical roles, it's just that there are so few that break them in certain ways that's it always refreshing to see.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it is trendy. Not interested in this crap tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
...you only want characters that fall into stereotyped gender roles? Really?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of us get off on it. Probably because we're told we shouldn't.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm...I don't know though, I feel like in the end, the canon version of Vegeta/Bulma is somewhat more subversive of gender roles than the gender-flipped version. Since Vegeta's whole shtick is being knocked down a peg and accepting that he's not the strongest and becoming content being basically a stay-at-home dad (which is kinda ehhhhh if he was a woman instead...unless Goku et all were also women in this AU I guess?) While Bulma's a billionaire genius scientist heir to a massive corporation who builds fancy technological shit for everyone. And kind of a spoiled brat. Which would be a little too cliche if she was a man.

Though I admit the idea of a gender-flipped Cell saga between the two of them would be cool! I mean, there would be a whole lot of character development potential in the fact that after female!Vegeta got knocked up, she, unlike male!Vegeta, would have to consciously decide NOT to abort Trunks, and to make the effort of dumping Trunks at male!Bulma's after giving birth instead of, IDK, pitching him off the nearest cliff.
