Maybe it's to a lesser extent but I think people have always been self-righteous about their ships and accusing the other side of being problematic in some way, if not in those words. I was briefly in the Avatar fandom and I was a Zutara fan, but I ran away from any discussion of it because both sides were so vicious and horrible. In FFVII, Cloud/Aeris vs Cloud/Tifa is also one of the most, well, verbally violent ship wars ever, and has been basically since 1997. I suppose that "SJW" language maybe wasn't so in place then, but that doesn't mean people weren't just as self-righteous about their ships.

IA with this. Ship wars have always been ugly and incredibly stupid, but with the internet being what it is now, it's easier for assholes to harass people about their opinion. I think that's the main difference... People have always been dicks, but they're more... Proactive about it now.

Bingo on the Cloud/Aerith and Cloud/Tifa ship wars. The really nasty parts of that whole flap (probably) vanished when a lot of Inside the Web forums and Geocities sites closed down, but there's still some remnants of that time period if you look hard enough. I'm not sure what that ship war is like these days, but I absolutely dread it being reignited after the remake is out and we have a whole new generation taking the steering wheel.

I am not in the FFVII fandom (not a Compilation fan), but I've noticed that now, with more material out there, there's more claims that one or the other is CANON, so fuck the other pairing. Literally, people will find "proof" from the bowels of "official" quotes, or SE material, to prove that Cloud/Tifa or Cloud/Aeris is actually canon. I know lots of ship wars get that, but something I always liked about FFVII was that in the end, nothing is canon and there's a lot of material for both sides to work with. And that's one of the beauties of the game, I think, that there is so much for the player to interpret themselves. So the claims of one side being canon just feel so offensive to me, and then I remember I'm too old to give a shit anymore. Still, fuck ship wars.

MTE. I used to be a pretty rabid Cloud/Aerith shipper, but after I got older, I realized the whole thing was stupid, lmao. And Tifa became one of my favorite characters, plus I began to see a whole lot more nuance in Cloud's relationships with both ladies.

And frankly, after Square royally fucked things up with all the asinine retcons in the Compilation, throwing around "this is canon" in regards to FF7 is so meaningless now, when you have to try and do all these mental gymnastics to make things fit... but that's another rant for another time, lmao.

Yeah. I love Zutara as a ship but I actively distanced myself from the phrase "Zutaran" when the fandom was still pretty active.
