A friend of mine is into these, but not super deep... as you said, the expense limits one's involvement. I actually wouldn't mind getting one but I can't justify putting so much money into a doll and all the really costly accessories.

Yeah. I occasionally feel guilty indulging myself in my toy collection, but even the cheapest BJDs are a significant fraction of the cost my entire collection (which, granted, isn't huge).

If you want to get into it but don't want to spend massive money, check out ResinSoul. Their sculpts have been getting better and better, you can mix and match heads, bodies, hands, etc just email them and ask if it's possible to make the franken-doll of your dreams, and their colour resin options are so, so cool. They're a great starter doll for someone who is unsure if they have the time/talent/money/inspiration/whatever else that might be holding them back. :)
