Yeah I've had friends who were involved in BJD fandom and it sounds like a nightmare.

Though I will say, I don't think it's nice to judge people for spending money on a hobby they enjoy. A lot of those super expensive dolls are really nice and if someone wants to buy it, more power to them. It's not any more ridiculous then other things people spend money on for their hobbies.

I think their point was that a lot of doll people get very snooty about people in "their hobby" who can't afford to drop that much money on a doll when they can.

I get their point but they also italicized "doll" as if it's ridiculous for people to spend that much of their money on it. Regardless of how messy the fandom is I don't think it's my business or anyone else's how people spend their income. Not to mention I've know some people into the hobby who really aren't rich, they just save their money because it's something they enjoy.

The only exposure I have to BJD enthusiasts are people who bitch and whine that Monster High dolls AREN'T BJDs in the tag....to people who know they aren't.

Their drama is pretty fun to watch. Most other fandom drama seems to be SJ-related these days, which is so boring and repetitive.

A friend of mine is into these, but not super deep... as you said, the expense limits one's involvement. I actually wouldn't mind getting one but I can't justify putting so much money into a doll and all the really costly accessories.

Yeah. I occasionally feel guilty indulging myself in my toy collection, but even the cheapest BJDs are a significant fraction of the cost my entire collection (which, granted, isn't huge).

If you want to get into it but don't want to spend massive money, check out ResinSoul. Their sculpts have been getting better and better, you can mix and match heads, bodies, hands, etc just email them and ask if it's possible to make the franken-doll of your dreams, and their colour resin options are so, so cool. They're a great starter doll for someone who is unsure if they have the time/talent/money/inspiration/whatever else that might be holding them back. :)

If I had the cash, I'd totally buy a Satyr BJD so I can make my draenei hunter. But that'd be it. Cause...ick those fucking prices. D:

Can't say I've been following the BJD fandom drama. But they can be so pretty. I've considered getting one because I thought it would be a cool thing to pose for a painting.

I'm scared that this has a fandom.

All my best drama stories come from BJD fandom.

Of course I also had someone cyberstalk me for 9 months over it too, where they kept trying to get me banned from other unrelated fandom sites, because I said I liked another company better than Volks. BJD people are intense.

I was a doll collector for a while, years ago. I think the thing that bothered me most was how many collectors' parents bought them $800 dolls. It really bugged me and I think I lost interest out of sheer disgust.

I'm often tempted to snoop around some forums and see what the latest scuttlebutt is. Good to know it's exactly the same as it was 6 years ago. The jointed dicks are new, though. Those BJD manufacturers always knew their audiences so well.
