Nah, Ship wars have always been unfunny and quite frankly, obnoxious. It's just that the majority of the "classic" ship wank has been lost to time (be it through deletion of Geocities sites, DA accounts being deactivated, etc) and most people only remember the stupid stuff that popped up on places like Fandom Wank.

Thing is, EVERYTHING is cyclical. Fandom isn't an exception. Yeah, it may seem like shipping wars these days are even uglier with this, that, and the other thing with accusations, smear campaigns, etc. But honestly, they weren't much different even 10 years ago. Or 15, for that matter. (I still remember the ugly ship wars between the Fox McCloud/Fara Phoenix and Fox/Krystal shippers in the Star Fox fandom, before it got fractured even more with each subsequent game)

But the big difference between then and now is that, during the LJ days, people were more insulated and everything wasn't completely out in the open. You could be involved in a fandom and not have to trip over the OTT bullshit that would go on elsewhere. With Tumblr, Twitter, etc., all of that is now out in the open and thus the unfunny stuff is amplified by tenfold. Especially since doxxing is now a thing and is, sadly, often encouraged by people who don't know when the hell to step back from the goddamn computer and get a reality check.

Like, I doubt that half the stuff going down in the Steven Universe or Force Awakens fandoms with their ship wars would be as notorious as it is right now if we were still in the LJ-style era, but w/e.

I generally try to avoid stepping into anything SU related, but once in a while something sneaks by my Tumblr Savior filters, lmao. But from what backdraft I encountered on my dash and elsewhere, there's wank over people who ship Jasper/Lapis and it conflating with abusive relationships or somesuch like that.

Yeahh, I love the show, a lot, and I actively avoid the fandom. I just don't want to go there. As with any fandom I will consume and enjoy fic and art and I'll talk about it here and with people IRL, but anywhere else (i.e. tumblr) it's not worth the risk of running into awful shit.

Well, ship wars are different now. There's now people who actively anti-ship things without it simply getting in the way of their pairing. These are called Antis.

So the ship wars often go "Jasper/Lapis is abusive!" and "Steven/Peridot is pedophilia!" Now Steven/Connie is considered Problematic because he's a little older than her. Tumblr is downright freaky about age gaps. It just came up that they were trying to lecture about a mere 4 year age difference between Rey and Finn.

I have seen some nastiness between the Pearl ships. Pearl/Amethyst seems especially wanky for some reason.

oh good grief, he's like...two years older than her? and they're KIDS, they're not having sex, they are basically holding hands and blushing (and most of the time they're not even doing that, they're friends with kiddie crushes on each other).

I mean it's soo cute, it's my OTP in the fandom, and I love art of them aged up (I have a few adorable ones saved on my comp) but...I don't...how do people complain about it?
