As a ton of people above me have said, I think the only difference is that back then, people didn't use as many buzzwords or academic-sounding language. No ~problematic~ sniveling or talk of "female bodies as a site of the juxtaposition of intersecting oppressive powers" horseshit, they just straight-up called ships and shippers sexist, racist, homophobic, classist, etc.

Which was WAAAAAYYYY more palatable to me personally because I cannot fucking stand putting your accusations of bigotry on the pedestal of academic mumbo-jumbo, but it was still every bit as nasty and ugly if not more so (it was a lot more direct and openly hostile, instead of being directed towards a generalized "anyone who..." and passive-aggressive in tone).
