What are some good horror movies without any gore.

Depends. What are you looking for? Thriller, psychological horror...?

Thriller and Psychological horrors would be great.

In the psychological/paranormal horror category: Jacob's Ladder, The Wicker Man, The Babadook, The Shining (very mild gore), the first Paranormal Activity, It Follows, As Above So Below, Grave Encounters.

In the thriller category: The Silence Of The Lambs, The Cell (sort of belongs in the psychological horror category also), Cloverfield (according to imdb), Crimson Peak, The Gift, Shutter Island, Zodiac, Donnie Darko, Gravity, 127 Hours (mild gore, one instance).

There are certainly more, but that's what springs to mind.

I dunno man I wouldn't list Jacob's Ladder or It Follows.

Jacob's Ladder didn't have gore so much as it had disturbing imagery. I just watched it on shitstream a month or two ago, so it's still pretty fresh in there.

And anon said they were okay with blood and death but not excessive gore? As far as I recall, It Follows didn't have gore so much as it had some blood and death. It's even listed on a couple of websites as a non gory horror movie, so I can't be the only one who thought it was fine.

I dunno. What happens to that first victim in It Follows seems like it breaks the no-broken-bones rule?

Also the first scene in Vietnam and the nightmare sequences from Jacob's Ladder absolutely violate the no-gore rule if we're being strict about it.

Well, I was assuming the OP meant they were ok as long as the injury in question wasn't gratuitous SAW-esque porn, which neither of those films are. If not, and OP actually meant not even mildly visceral injuries are allowed, then I also have to strike Crimson Peak and probably several others from that list as well.

Yeah. I almost considered putting Alien in my list, but I reviewed *that* scene in the crew cafeteria and decided it violates the rule.

I'm iffy on the gore factor on "Grave Encounters" - there's that one scene towards the end where one of the male leads noms down on the rat.

Yeah, most of these are on the very mild to no gore end of the scale because I figured that's what OP meant.

Finding a horror movie with absolutely nothing that could be classified as gore whatsoever is... well, it's nearly a lost cause unless you want to go back to 1950's horror. Even then, it isn't a guarantee.

Every single movie that shows up on the non-gore lists has something that could theoretically constitute an instance of gore if you look hard enough. It's sort of an exercise in picking movies with the least explicit things, fwiw.

Define gore?

No more gore than Sixth Sense. Blood is fine, death is fine, just no guts/gushing wounds/breaking bones.

I admit I haven't seen Sixth Sense in over a decade so that's not a great frame of reference for me. Here's what I can think of off the top of my head:

The Haunting (1963 version -- no violence at all!)
Psycho (other than the famous shower scene, almost no blood to speak of -- and it's black and white anyway)
Session 9
28 Days Later (For a zombie movie, pretty gore-free, though do expect a lot of blood, mostly from the infected themselves.)

I have others but they usually have one or two singular moments of intense violence or maybe a little gore as shocking high-water marks for otherwise low-key, slow-burn films -- I can list those if you want!

I don't think Sixth Sense had gore. A little blood, maybe, images of dead ghosts and such. I'm extremely sensitive to gore myself and the only thing that kind of disturbed me was a quick shot of one ghost who had died by gunshot to the face and the back of his head is kind of blown out, but since he's a ghost it's not really graphic or very realistic looking.

Older horror and psychological thriller movies might be good for you, like The Bad Seed, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, The Changeling (1980), Rosemary's Baby, The Wicker Man (1973), etc. and The Others with Nicole Kidman is more recent but very much in the older style and a very creepy and beautiful film. I would hesitate with Session 9, recced upthread. I count gory grossouts like Audition among my favorites, but there's a bit in Session 9 where you only hear a gory thing happening that I found really disturbing. Very effective film, especially if you're interested in asylum stuff (it was actually filmed at Danvers before it got turned into apartments), but exceptionally dark and dispiriting. Except for one really funny line reading by David Caruso.

It's worth cautioning that Rosemary's Baby is a Roman Polanski film.

That being said, Session 9 is so, so great. I'd mark it in one of my top 10 horror films, really. It's also a huge influence on one of the most infamous and scariest levels in a non-horror game.

Mama is pretty good, if you don't mind furry moths and distorted, freaky human-like forms. There are some bones.

Psychological horror: Séance On A Wet Afternoon (from the 1960s).

The Birds, Psycho, Cabin in the Woods (minor gore, parody of sorts of the horror genre that reads more like an adult Scooby Doo)
