Horror movies without gore

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some good horror movies without any gore.

Depends. What are you looking for? Thriller, psychological horror...?

I don't think Sixth Sense had gore. A little blood, maybe, images of dead ghosts and such. I'm extremely sensitive to gore myself and the only thing that kind of disturbed me was a quick shot of one ghost who had died by gunshot to the face and the back of his head is kind of blown out, but since he's a ghost it's not really graphic or very realistic looking.

Older horror and psychological thriller movies might be good for you, like The Bad Seed, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, The Changeling (1980), Rosemary's Baby, The Wicker Man (1973), etc. and The Others with Nicole Kidman is more recent but very much in the older style and a very creepy and beautiful film. I would hesitate with Session 9, recced upthread. I count gory grossouts like Audition among my favorites, but there's a bit in Session 9 where you only hear a gory thing happening that I found really disturbing. Very effective film, especially if you're interested in asylum stuff (it was actually filmed at Danvers before it got turned into apartments), but exceptionally dark and dispiriting. Except for one really funny line reading by David Caruso.

Mama is pretty good, if you don't mind furry moths and distorted, freaky human-like forms. There are some bones.

Psychological horror: Séance On A Wet Afternoon (from the 1960s).

The Birds, Psycho, Cabin in the Woods (minor gore, parody of sorts of the horror genre that reads more like an adult Scooby Doo)

Last minute Washington DC Questions! Also, Cash!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-02-28 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So, right now the weather is looking iffy for my trip. There are likely to be several days of rain and possibly one day of snow. How much does 1-2 inches of snow put DC out? Especially in regards to the metro.

A more general question, how much cash should I bring? Right now I have 20 $1s, 10 $5s, 5 $10s, and 6 $20s. I also have my credit and debit card for most purchases (I assume most places accept credit cards these days).

[personal profile] shortysc22 2016-02-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That should be more than enough cash. Places where you'll spend cash are the street stalls in NYC and maybe some mom and pop food places are cash only. Otherwise, it's mostly both card and cash.

Just be prepared on walking days to have an umbrella because the monuments have absolutely no area to take refuge from the rain (I got caught in a hail storm once at the Korean War Memorial. Not fun)

Re: Last minute Washington DC Questions! Also, Cash!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
With the amount of snow they've been having, 1-2 inches should be okay for the Metro. Especially since they got SO much flack for closing it down during the blizzard.

Re: Last minute Washington DC Questions! Also, Cash!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
1-2 inches should be just fine. We tend to take care of stuff pretty quickly in the city, and in regards to the Metro, it won't slow things down at all.

Warm trousers for cold days

What should I wrap my legs in? I think jeans can help, but I hate the texture of jeans so I rarely wear them.

Re: Warm trousers for cold days

Layers are your friends. Wear a set of tights and then leggings under any set of trousers and you'll be toasty all day long.

seconding the layering. In the winter, I have a few pairs of fleece lined tights and one days when it's especially cold I'll wear them under pants. So warm! Jeans are actually not that warm when compared to leggings/tights and layering them.

Soft, thin wool leggings under soft pants. Feel great and fends off the cold.

I find corduroy can be cozy. Long underwear under you trousers is your best bet if it's really cold, though (like, well below freezing all day).

I wear fleece-lined leggings to work under those stretch-jersey maxi skirts, the kind with the waist you fold over? Very very comfortable and warm. I also have some cable-knit tights and some heavier tights i got at Xmas with a neat pattern on them, all for under the skirt.

I think it would be uncomfortable to wear anything but the xmas tights under pants, but that's just me.

Sleeping with a mouthguard?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been waking up with my teeth tightly clenched lately due to stress, and as a result my jaw has been kinda sore. So I got a hot-water-mold-to-fit mouthguard and started wearing that at night.

I find at first I just want to clamp down on the mouthguard, but that eventually eases up. My main issue is the next morning, I take it out, and am suddenly uncomfortably aware of the fact that my molars now come in contact with each other again, after several hours apart.

Is that normal? And if so, is that feeling ever going to go away, because it lasts a good 2 hours and is so unpleasant.

Cold/Flu advice

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So whatever I have (and it appears to be more likely a flu rather than a cold) is in my lungs. I'm taking all the cold meds and taking frequent hot showers. And sleeping. But I'm not sure if I'm taking the right cold meds. If I take the mucus thinner I get drippy and gross and can't lay down without coughing. But if I don't take that or if I use Vicks Vapor Rub, I end up having to take my inhaler.

What's the best thing to do.

Friend and GF fighting advice

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a friend, and I have a girlfriend, and they happen to be roommates. I met the girlfriend through the friend, and knew her for a couple years before dating her. (we've been dating a year now.) The friend is one of my oldest friends, and due to issues with me moving and having depression, she is now one of my only friends.

Recently they've been fighting about roommate stuff. Basically my GF got robbed, and now gets mad when my friend does stuff like invite people my gf doesn't know over without telling her, which is totally understandable imo, but I have ended up kind of being in the middle. They both complain to me (my gf especially about my friend) and I feel very stuck and uncomfortable. I don't want to tell them they can't talk to me, and its not like they've asked me to choose between them and I don't think they would, but it just makes me so uncomfortable.

Is there anyway for me to deal with this without alienating them? They're not going to be living together much longer (not related to this fight, my friend will be moving after she graduates), so should I just suck it up till it blows over? Idk what to do :/

Re: Questions/Advice - Should I give up (a bit of suicide tw)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't enjoy my major and will likely not work in it after graduation. My health is failing, I don't do work and is dragging others down with me. I know I'm being such an asshole but I just can't muster up the energy. Dropping out would be impossible because my parents pay my intuition and they want me to at least graduate. I tried and get a bit better last semester but it's falling apart very hard right now, I'm seriously contemplating suicide. I feel trapped and hopeless, should I just give up and drop out? The consequences would be a disaster and I have nothing.
