Sleeping with a mouthguard?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been waking up with my teeth tightly clenched lately due to stress, and as a result my jaw has been kinda sore. So I got a hot-water-mold-to-fit mouthguard and started wearing that at night.

I find at first I just want to clamp down on the mouthguard, but that eventually eases up. My main issue is the next morning, I take it out, and am suddenly uncomfortably aware of the fact that my molars now come in contact with each other again, after several hours apart.

Is that normal? And if so, is that feeling ever going to go away, because it lasts a good 2 hours and is so unpleasant.

I've been wearing mouthguards for years, ever since I found out I seriously grind my teeth at night (which would not only damage my teeth, but give me a sore jaw).

I think the feeling of "being different" when you take it out is pretty normal at first. I think I've trained myself to always have my teeth slightly apart in resting position even when I'm away.

Though I can say, I never was totally comfortable with the ones that you boil and mold to your jaw. My local drug store has a much less... intrusive-feeling? style, that's basically just two pads connected around your lower gum, with each pad sitting between your teeth at either side of your jaw. It's more comfortable and easier to keep clean. You might give that a try, I don't know if it'll help with your issue exactly, but who knows?

Yeah, I got the same damn thing. It takes a few weeks to adjust, you just got to keep persevering.

Okay, I recently had a bout of teeth clenching due to stress. I tried the mouth guard thing and it made the problem much worse. So, if your clenching and pain starts worsening, you may want to stop using the mouth guard and work on techniques to lower your stress before bed.

Huh........interesting. I wear a mouthguard (just like the kind you described) every night and have done so for several years. It does feel a bit weird to take it out but I've never felt it as uncomfortable before and I don't think about it once it's out.

Ask your dentist??

Also how long have you been using it?
