Cold/Flu advice

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-02-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So whatever I have (and it appears to be more likely a flu rather than a cold) is in my lungs. I'm taking all the cold meds and taking frequent hot showers. And sleeping. But I'm not sure if I'm taking the right cold meds. If I take the mucus thinner I get drippy and gross and can't lay down without coughing. But if I don't take that or if I use Vicks Vapor Rub, I end up having to take my inhaler.

What's the best thing to do.

Rest and fluids. Nothing else. Remember, properly treated you can be over the flu in seven days, untreated and you can be ill all week.

Seriously, call in sick this week and just keep home and keep hydrated and keep calm. You are doing you and the world a favor by doing so.

Oh, I'm planning on staying home. I've got no plans this week anyway, and I have barely enough energy to walk from my bed to the kitchen and back. I'm just never sure which are the right meds to take.

Unless the coughing is really getting out of hand, I'd just let it happen. Your lungs are trying to get all the gunk out. Mucus thinners/expectorants aid that.

Lots of rest, and try to eat well, i.e. comfort foods that are easy on the stomach but not necessarily too junk foody. Soups and stews, hot tea with honey and lemon to soothe the throat.

According to my pediatrician stuff like camphor and eucalyptus which is in wick vapo rub is problematic because it can trigger allergic reactions. That's why using it on children under 6 is advised against. So if you're already asthmatic you should leave that one.

If a stuffed nose is part of your problem try drinking fennel tea. I discovered that one recently myself when I had a cup of tea at kindergarten and my stuffed nose immediately turned runny. When I asked what it was they told me fennel was a traditional remedy for stuffed nose.

Also very important if your lungs are affected: breathe consciously and deeply. I had pleurisy a year ago (horribly painful) and they literally told me at the hospital that breathing fresh air is what helps best. Keeping your respiratory system damp and stuffy means creating the optimal environment for secondary infections, apparently.
If breathing is hard because of the cough try to get cough suppressing med. I can't get the stuff here and I don't know where you live but I hear that the potent codeine based stuff is over the counter in some places.

Oh and I've never heard of taking hot showers being helpful. If anything I'd think they dehydrate you more. just keep warm, rest, drink lukewarm tea and breathe.

The hot shower thing was told to me by doctors. Its the steam. The steam loosens chest congestion. I always do that whenever I have asthma problems and it helps.

That makes sense I guess. I usually put some boiling salt water in a pot next to me or stick my head over it and cover with a towel... but then I had someone tell me recently that inhaling steam was totally last century and bad for you because it makes the mucous membranes swell up which makes it counterproductive. I guess that's one of the things even doctors cant agree on

Your pediatrician misinformed you. You're not supposed to give camphor products to kids under 6 because it's very poisonous if ingested or if you inhale too much of it and toddlers are small and can't be trusted not to stick things in their mouths. It has nothing to do with allergies.

Steam can be helpful, especially if the Vick's is triggering your asthma, but be careful with the hot showers if you're feeling light headed because the heat can mess with your blood pressure and make you faint.

You want to keep taking the expectorant, or all that gunk is going to wind up doing bad things to your sinuses or your lungs, but look for one that has a cough suppressant included, like Mucinex DM (or generic equivalent thereof).

A hot shower isn't going to dehydrate you. It's not like dehydration happens that fast, and you're not going to be in the shower for hours and hours. If it's a concern, have a glass of water before or after and there, you're set. Unless you're already badly dehydrated to begin with, 15-20 minutes in even a dry desert environment won't be enough to harm you.
