... and who says they even need to be compatible?

One of the most memorable erotic fics I've ever read is about a sexual encounter between Jack Harkness and a horta (the latter being the aliens from the ToS episode "The Devil in the Dark.") The horta are silicone-based lumps that secrete acid that dissolves rock. Traditional sex isn't so much an option, yet this fic turned that restriction into one of the most imaginative E-rated pieces I've ever read.

That was....quite a fic. Thank you for recommending it. I really wish there were more memorable fics like this. Something just so unexpected that it works, and beautifully too.

I know! I can't even recall who recced it to me -- and when I understood the premise my eyebrows went up and up -- but DAMN, what a fic.

ETA: I think that one of the comments to it put it perfectly, when it said that Jack is so open-minded it needs a new word, and that he truly is an entirely unslefish lover who delights in giving pleasure. When that giving takes such a charmingly unconventional twist, how can we not be charmed as well?

(Oddly enough (or maybe not? :p) the only other erotic fic that's stayed with me is also a Captain Jack xeno fic. Shorter, funnier, and more conventionally smutty, it's -- well, I suppose it's more in the "traditional tentacle porn" category: Jack, his ex-lover John, and an octopus courtesan.

Speaking of fics with strange sex between seemingly incompatible beings, I have to rec Two-Legged Mussel Picker (http://archiveofourown.org/works/4882957) by De_Nugis. It's Sam/Castiel from Supernatural having true form sex (Castiel is an angel who normally possesses a human in order to interact with other humans). It's kinda like mountain climbing, and the language and imagery are very evocative and strangely erotic.
