Tea recommendations?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested in finding non-flavoured teas, preferably green or similar. So far, I've tried and enjoyed Gunpowder, Japanese Sencha and Green Daarjeling. Any other suggestions?

Feel free to ask for recs, yourselves.

Would jasmine green tea or lapsang souchong count as flavored teas to you? I like white tea and rice tea.

I've never tried jasmine green tea, but I think I'd sort of count the Lapsang as a flavoured one, because it is smoked. I do love Lapsang Souchong, though.

Oh, white tea has been on my "must try" list for a while. Will get some next time.

AYRT I'm a little confused about where you're drawing the line for flavored teas. Jasmine tea is also flavoured, it tastes of jasmine. Can you define it a little, OP?

White tea is very nice.

Oh, okay. I'm looking for anything that is not infused with flavour. In that case the jasmine is out.

But surely that leaves you with breakfast tea, yorkshire tea, green tea, white tea and that's it. All other teas have added flavour, including Lapsang souchong. Also gunpowder is infused with flavour....

Re: Tea recommendations?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It is? I asked in the tea shop and they said it's unflavoured.

Re: Tea recommendations?

Uh... I guess you could argue that Lapsang souchong is "flavored" in the sense that it's dried over fire and has a smoky flavor, but gunpowder tea isn't flavored. It's just Chinese green tea rolled into a small pellet.

"That's it"? There's quite a variety of unflavored black teas and green teas in addition to white tea that fits OP's needs. They definitely are NOT limited to "breakfast tea" and "yorkshire tea", which are blends of different black teas, usually assam, ceylon, Kenyan teas, etc. There are dozens and dozens of varieties of oolong alone. Gunpowder tea isn't flavored in the sense that Earl Grey is (with added bergamot) it's just Chinese green tea. There are LOTS of different varieties of both Chinese AND Japanese green teas.

I don't mean to be rude here, but it doesn't seem like you know a great deal about tea.

Yes but OP ruled out jasmine tea which is just green tea with added jasmine. Hence my confusion. If OP wants only tea without additions of anything else then that limits them quite a bit.

Try green rooibos, it is a little different but has nice earthy tones to it.

Never heard of that before, but I'll be on the look out for it. Thanks.

Some of my recent favorites are Oolong and Pu-erh tea.
Just a warning about Pu-erh: it's basically fermented green tea, and is EXTREMELY strong. You're only supposed to steep it about 20 seconds, and you can reuse the leaves a whole bunch. It took me a while to figure this out :) but now I quite enjoy the tea, haha.

I do like me some Pu erh but holy crap was I ever in for a bad time the first time I tried it.

Now I know to go for 1-2 bags per pot, not per cup.

Yeah, the first time I made it I steeped one bag on one cup for two minutes. The result was about as drinkable as you can imagine XD

Yeah, I bought a box of Pu-erh once, after the first jug that made to way I make other teas, I went online looking into it and discovered it not only has a short steeping time but sometimes it's advisable to wash it beforehand too (steep it once and throw that water away, then make tea with it).

http://taooftea.com/ is a great place to explore for vareties and they let you buy relatively small amounts for testing.

Barley tea (aka mugicha/boricha)? It's roasted, so it has a kind of hearty taste.

If you can get your hands on it, silver needle white tea is really good. Just don't oversteep it because white tea turns bitter easily. Oolong and pu-erh teas are also wonderful.

Forgot to add genmaicha. I'm not sure if you'd consider it flavored since it's mixed with brown rice, but it's got a very nutty type sweetness to it.

Nayrt -- silver needle <3 If you like that, snow sprout green tea has a similar refreshing lightness -- unfortunately also hard to get a hold of and tends towards the pricier side.

Try genmaicha (green tea with rice) and houji cha (roasted green tea) and if you want to include non-tea tea try mugi-cha (barley tea). Sen change is great and all especially with sweets but these others are less bitter and I personally prefer them when in japan.
