(Borderlands, Dameon Clarke)

I hope this movie never gets made. Handsome Jack fangirls disgust me and I don't need to hear any more of their squeeing.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I see him all over my dash and I don't get the appeal.

OP:

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who finds him an interesting character, but I do definitely see people who pretend his actions were totally right/view him entirely as a victim as totally missing the point. I'm curious where a lot of the leather-pantsing is coming from.

I mainly hang out in mostly-female (who are attracted to males) fandom spaces where you easily chalk it up to the assumption of "attractive = worthy of redemption" à la Loki in the Avengers movie (I specify the Avengers because Loki was actually portrayed fairly sympathetically in the first Thor movie and as a total dick in the Avengers and STILL had fangirls squealing about redeeming him)

But I know this also exists in straight-male dominated gaming spaces where is appearance would be much less of a factor, so I'm genuinely curious as to what the original source of the romanticizing his character came from.

Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure the romanticizing is exclusively because of the female parts of the otherwise male-dominated fandom.

Handsome Jack still managed to become popular enough that nearly all of the games feature him, including the prequel that focuses on his origin story. He must have a fair share of fans in the male-dominated side of fandom, as female gamer's purchases likely wouldn't be enough for companies to justify his inclusion as a money maker.

There are large parts of the female fandom that outright despise him however (sometimes to "if you like this character at all you're an ABUSE APOLOGIST" levels) along with significantly more level-headed fans.

I'm just genuinely curious because there's likely a portion of the "male" side of the fandom that white-washes or otherwise justifies his actions to the point of being problematic and I'm curious as to how these discussions differ from ones on the female side of the fandom (other than the obvious "Handsome Jack my son/boyfriend/husband and did nothing wrong" that sometimes comes up)

I've wondered about this too. I see many people who came into the fandom around the time TPS was released, so they probably get a very different idea about Jack's personality than those who have played BL2 before TPS. As one of the latter, I have real problems with all those theories about how Jack is the true hero, especially if they also feature Lilith as the true villain.

jack is a character i love to hate but it's not jack without dameon's voice, and honestly if they're actually going to go that route, they should just pay him enough money that he'll do it again.

who is the actor they already have in mind though? like... if they're gonna do something borderlands-related just make it an entirely new story or something jack has been in 3 of the 4 games (including tftbl) i think his time is done.

Literally the only information I've seen so far is articles talking about actors who COULD be casted as Jack or fancasts people post online.

Honestly, Jack is one of those characters through 80% of the plot you only interact with via audio so voice is pretty damn important. And whoever they pick, he needs to be a damn good actor. I kept thinking during the last standoff with him in the second game that (although I doubt Clarke recorded it all in one sitting) it must have been fucking exhausting to record considering all the emotions that needed to come across and the sheer loudness Jack had as well.

Fury Road was an excellent Borderlands movie, tbh. I don't think anyone else could do it better.

OP: I feel this but

The things that would differentiate a Borderlands movie from the newest Mad Max movie would be more humor (albeit very black humor), science fiction elements, and moral grayness from basically all sides of the characters. I adored Mad Max and the similarities that would inevitably arise if Borderlands was made into a movie make me hope they'll wait a couple years at least (which would probably be the case to be honest due to the fact I don't think the project has even started yet) because otherwise it would probably get accused of trying to rip off Mad Max.

Uh, no. Please don't compare the majesty that's Fury Road to the tripe that's the Borderlands franchise.

Admittedly there only similarities are a unusually colorful post apocalyptic setting and aesthetic similarities between the psychos and the War Boy, other than that they are EXTREMELY different.

I was just saying that people would probably notice visual similarities, gosh.

To be fair, Borderlands draws a lot from the Mad Max franchise. Mad Max's barely-human, psychopathic bandits have been an influence on post-apocalypse media for decades. Fallout 3's raiders (and their New Vegas counterparts the Fiends,) the gangers in Escape from New York, the bandits in Rage, etc. It's only logical that a little of it'd feed back into Mad Max for the fourth movie.

Tell us how you really feel.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I would be okay if they cast someone other than Dameon Clarke, as long as they nailed Jack's cock of the walk body language and attitude.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean as in having an actor stand in for Jack's physical acting/blocking while Dameon Clarke dubs his voice or just straight up having the actor do Jack's voice, physical acting, etc.?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Just a different actor. Clarke is great, but I don'tthink he is one of a kind.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
oh man, I didn't even know they were considering a movie =/

in general I gotta say do not want....but if they DID get him for Handsome Jack I'd be pretty dang interested to see that, no lie.
