Re: Canon pairings you like most - or many - people don't

Harry Potter:

- Ron/Hermione. I think they were not only equally flawed, but actually flawed in many of the same ways, which meant they balanced one another out well. I love their dynamic.

- Sort of Remus/Tonks, although I like them better in fanon, especially with Pottermore's backstory. I think they could've been great in canon, but JKR squished them in so much that it just didn't work, especially in DH. (HBP I was fine with. I was even fine with Tonks's meltdown; I think I may be the only person in fandom who actually saw that coming.)

- Harry/Ginny. I love them. Also, for far from the last time, Ginny is not Lily 2.0. Actually, Hermione's more of a Lily parallel than Ginny. (And I see Ron as James, Harry as Sirius.)

+1 on H/R. I'm surprised at how much hate they get tbh. I think they're adorable.

I've probably said this on FS before, but: I think the problem is that it's all from Harry's perspective, so the reader mostly gets two people fighting and Harry occasionally being like "Welp, that's awkward. Anyway, about Voldemort." There's a lot more filling in the blanks required in the books, which I think can be a barrier to entry for a lot of people. (I hated H/R in the books, but I liked it in the movies because the relationship was freed from Harry's perspective.)

That's an interesting take on it! I liked it in the books too, but it had a different feel to it in the movies. And yeah, Harry's definitely gonna be biased and it was even indicated in the books he dreaded them getting together because he was afraid they'd break up and it'd get awkward. (He was right, sort of, but at least while they were broken up/fighting Harry had a lot of other stuff on his mind...) That pretty much summed it up from his viewpoint as you said.

I don't actively ship anybody in Harry Potter (I'm not really fannish, I just like the books a lot), but yeah, I'm pretty okay with how it all shook out with Hermione/Ron and Harry/Ginny.

Harry/Ginny is weird for me because I shipped it before it became canon and I like the idea in theory. I just don't like the way it played out in canon. But I can imagine them working through the issues that I see with the way it happened in canon and eventually being quite happy.

I love Remus/Tonks but they really didn't get a good deal in the books, which was a shame.

Yeah, in retrospect I think JKR would've been better off leaving them where they were in OoTP - together enough that if you wanted to, you could imagine a scenario where they were secretly dating, but at the same time without forcing them in where it didn't make sense.
