All I want out of life is to be able to search for 'NOT this.' Just filter out all the things that squick me. I know there's some sort of external code you can use, but when I looked into that it was all a bit too complicated for me to bother. I just want a button damn it.

if you don't want a certain pairing or tag, you can just put -"whatever" in the search field. or are you talking about something else?

I'm talking about being able to filter out any story with, say, infidelity or something else I don't like. So that should work, I'll try that.

You don't need external coding. In the search bar just go -"squick" -"CharacterA/CharacterB"

I don't think it works for warnings, though? But thank you, I will try that.

If its tagged it should work

What warnings? Like Rape, Major Character Death, and such? If so, yes it does.

Fantastic! You and the anon just made my life a hell of a lot easier.

Re: AO3

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I do this and my search query is soon longer than my arm, since I've blocked out everything/every character I hate (and it works like a charm.

Related gripe: I wish that people would use common tags, like prostitution, so that I wouldn't have to block out ten different words just because every writer likes to use their own euphemisms.

If you always want to block certain characters, try ao3 savior:

The -"tag" function is great for searches, but if you never ever want to see a specific tag, character, fandom, or even author, ao3 savior is the more efficient solution.

But why not just make it an option on the filters bar? It drives me crazy that ff.n's search filters are better than A03's.

If you want to remove all instances of a tag, fandom, author or pairing, try ao3 saviour (based on tumblr saviour, if you're familiar with that). It might take you a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it's worth it if you want a permanent filter (the -"tag" thing is great for searches, but you would have to enter it in the filter section every time you load a new page).

I blacklist certain fandoms, pairings and one author I absolutely cannot stand with ao3 saviour and it's great.

AO3 Saviour was the thing I had looked at but didn't think I had the patience to implement. I'll look at it again, though!

It looks a bit overwhelming if you have never used scripts or greasemonkey before, but it's really worth the initial effort! Once you get it installed it's super easy to use.

My main problem is that I only read on my tablet. My computer is for fandom secrets and writing. But I guess I could always search for what I want and then copy links into my tablet.

Re: AO3

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-03-01 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I do that. Since AO3 saviour doesn't work on a tablet, I have this huge -"word" list with all the stuff I don't want on standby and copy it into the search bar.
Now if people could fucking learn to tag correctly (or consistently, I have at least 6 different flavours of writing m-preg on that list), that would be great.

Ughhhhh this. I love tumblr and their silly tag system, but I HATE that it's spread to AO3 where I have much better filtering options that now don't work because instead of 'infidelity' they've tagged it 'kinda infidelity but not really I mean they're soulmates and no one gets hurt' or something like that.

Re: AO3

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-03-01 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There are even some poor souls on AO3 who do nothing else than look through the tags and create tag collections for things things that are the same but get written differently by everyone. So you can find things by clicking a tag even if that's not the main tag used on the archive(provided that it's already been assimilated into one) but I don't think it extends to excluding tags with the search function. And it definitely doesn't work on all-logic-to-the-wind tumblr type tags.

SAME

the True Struggle: finding Sam/Steve fic that isn't Steve/Bucky, lol

Steve/Bucky is slowly taking over. I ship Stony so my fic is in no danger of being dwarfed, but I've noticed Stucky is becoming 'those two background guys' in all the other pairing fics. I'm notbugged by this I just find it really funny.
