AO3 should put a limit on how many stories you can post at once. To like 10 stories in a 24 hour period. I get so annoyed when some idiot posts like 20 short stories at once that I have to skip to get to non-annoying writers.

Also, stop posting a bunch of 200 word stories. I'd rather deal with someone posting a bunch of tiny stories together with 50 tags than 30 tiny stories.

I also hate when someone is posting a series and it really should just be all one story with chapters.

Oh GOD, this. I hover around the edges of a fandom with one pairing that's canon but ~problematic~ (which I love), so there's very little fic for it.

Or rather, there are 121 fics on AO3 for it, but all but 37 are written by the same author. Who has written (no joke) a SEVENTY-ONE (71) -PART SERIES, where each part is <1500 words and posted as a separate fic.

They're not even a bad writer or anything, but Jesus H. Christ, CONSOLIDATE.

Ugh yes I hate when people a ton of short stories as a ~series~ so that they can get the extra hits/kudos. If your stories are that short, MAKE THEM CHAPTERS.

Re: AO3

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
All the genres are ship-based, which I don't like, and "crossover" needs to be an official something where the subs form explicitly asks "is this a crossover." And then there needs to be an easy ticky for filtering that out of searches.

Re: AO3

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-03-01 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes! I was looking for Age of Adaline fic, and all the 5 results were fusions and crossovers! >:(

All I want out of life is to be able to search for 'NOT this.' Just filter out all the things that squick me. I know there's some sort of external code you can use, but when I looked into that it was all a bit too complicated for me to bother. I just want a button damn it.

Re: AO3

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
if you don't want a certain pairing or tag, you can just put -"whatever" in the search field. or are you talking about something else?

You don't need external coding. In the search bar just go -"squick" -"CharacterA/CharacterB"

If you want to remove all instances of a tag, fandom, author or pairing, try ao3 saviour (based on tumblr saviour, if you're familiar with that). It might take you a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it's worth it if you want a permanent filter (the -"tag" thing is great for searches, but you would have to enter it in the filter section every time you load a new page).

I blacklist certain fandoms, pairings and one author I absolutely cannot stand with ao3 saviour and it's great.

Okay, my thoughts on this:

http://ao3org.tumblr.com/post/139464043573/recent-changes-to-canonical-character-tags-for

I agree with people saying that the issue isn't that we don't UNDERSTAND what you're doing. It's just a stupid and arbitrary policy. I am one of those people who has stopped reading Tolkien stuff on AO3 because I can't differentiate between the / and the | at a glance. The pairing tags are ridiculous right now.

And they're really stupid. What is Aragorn? Aragorn II | Estel | Wingfoot | Thorongil | Elessar | Strider - how do you decide which to use and which not to use? And how is putting the HoME names more inclusive? I've never met a Tolkien fan who didn't know the Sindarin names, even if they prefer the Quenya ones. Most authors will still tag the Sindarin names to get the most eyes on the fic.

It's bullshit.

Re: AO3

I'm the opposite. I really appreciate adding in the different names, at least in some cases. In some cases there are different names that would be used in different points in canon. Like Sauron is Mairon until after Numenor. But if they just used Mairon some people wouldn't know who it is, and if they just use Sauron some people would get confused with fics that use Mairon.

I find tagging difficult sometimes because I don't want to use Tumblr-style tags and it drives me nuts when people do. But at the same time sometimes there is a tag that I think gets across something important in the fic, but it is a tag that doesn't exist. I don't like making up a new tag but sometimes you have to.

Re: AO3

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah sometimes I come across something in my fic that I really think should be tagged/warned for, but doesnt have an existing tag and its like :/ I totally get the hate for tumblr tags cause stream of consciousness is so annoying, but there is a reason for non standard tags.

New/Non-standard tag isn't the same thing as Tumblr-style tags. The problem with them isn't that they're non-standard, it's that no one gives a fuck if you "feel like trash now uwu" over your fic.

Re: AO3

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-03-01 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
This happens to me sometimes. I wanted to tag that characters used sweet nothings during sex, but "sweet nothings" and "sweet talk" were not already tags. I had to either pick "dirty talk," "pillow talk," or "sweet/hot," which just didn't quite cut the mustard.

I write super dank nasty dark fic that's very popular on kink memes and stuff but the way fandom is these days makes me think I'd be crucified, or at least considered very "problematic" if I were to post it somewhere non-anon like AO3.

Is that a valid worry or is AO3 not like that in general?

I want to personally punch every MCU, XFMC, and TASM fan who's ever tagged their shitty movieverse fic with the comicverse tags.

For fucks sake, the movies and the comics are NOT interchangeable. Separate tags exist for a reason. When I go into the "X-Men (comics)" tag it's not 'cause I wanna see your godawful 300k XMFC Cherik A/B/O barista AU bullshit.

I wish they'd set up tags for main pairings vs background pairings. It's a pain the the butt to end up reading a story about the wrong people because everything was tagged.

Also I remember when they used to have all the tags displayed rather than just the top 10. That made things a lot easier when you wanted to read something specific. You'd wouldn't have to guess how it'd be tagged.

I'm kind of stuck on my second fic right now but I want to finish it eventually. My first one did really well, or at least it did well in my eyes. I got over 110 kudos on it in over a month!

It would make my reading experience so much more pleasant if people could learn to tag correctly or consistently. I have tons of different versions of writing, for example, "m-preg" listed to filter it out but there are always new creative ways of writing it, it appears.
