I'm the opposite. I really appreciate adding in the different names, at least in some cases. In some cases there are different names that would be used in different points in canon. Like Sauron is Mairon until after Numenor. But if they just used Mairon some people wouldn't know who it is, and if they just use Sauron some people would get confused with fics that use Mairon.

Most authors put that information in the author notes. I don't think that's an unreasonable thing to ask of an author. I DO think it's unreasonable to make the tagging system so unwieldy for the rest of fandom.

Take this tag: Amras/Amrod/Caranthir/Celegorm/Curufin/Fëanor/Maedhros/Maglor, which has 7 fics so it's not a unicorn. It becomes, Amras/Amrod/Caranthir | Morifinwë/Celegorm | Turcafinwë/Curufin | Curufinwë/Fëanor | Curufinwë/Maedhros | Maitimo/Maglor | Makalaurë. Which is easier to see?

Or the fact that Curufinwë is attached to BOTH Feanor and Curufin; is that easier for the fans who aren't hardcore nerds?

And in your own example, the fact that both names are there means you can't easily search for after-Numenor Sauron fics because you're losing the signal that THIS fic is a Mairon fic and not a Sauron fic. The people who are interested in a Sauron fic are really quickly going to learn his other names. But expecting that of EVERY character in Tolkien's legendarium is really unreasonable.

There is actually a fix for Chrome and I think Firefox. I don't use it, but I reblogged it to my Tumblr for those who want it. If you want, I could give you the link.

So, instead of going with the simple solution of just using the names Tolkien himself used for the majority of his works, everyone who wants to read Tolkien fic has to download an app that will likely have to be updated with some frequency. Not to mention what a barrier this is to new fans.

Tolkien fandom has spent decades shipping without this policy. Tolkien-specific sites like the Silmarillion Guild don't use it. Why can't AO3 listen to the actual Tolkien community, instead of catering to a handful of elitist fans? Because that's what they're doing and it is bullshit.

Okay? Do you want the link? It isn't done through AO3, someone else came up with it. But followers of mine who don't like the tag changes seem to think it works pretty well.
