I agree with people saying that the issue isn't that we don't UNDERSTAND what you're doing. It's just a stupid and arbitrary policy. I am one of those people who has stopped reading Tolkien stuff on AO3 because I can't differentiate between the / and the | at a glance. The pairing tags are ridiculous right now.
And they're really stupid. What is Aragorn? Aragorn II | Estel | Wingfoot | Thorongil | Elessar | Strider - how do you decide which to use and which not to use? And how is putting the HoME names more inclusive? I've never met a Tolkien fan who didn't know the Sindarin names, even if they prefer the Quenya ones. Most authors will still tag the Sindarin names to get the most eyes on the fic.
It's bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 12:58 am (UTC)(link)Take this tag: Amras/Amrod/Caranthir/Celegorm/Curufin/Fëanor/Maedhros/Maglor, which has 7 fics so it's not a unicorn. It becomes, Amras/Amrod/Caranthir | Morifinwë/Celegorm | Turcafinwë/Curufin | Curufinwë/Fëanor | Curufinwë/Maedhros | Maitimo/Maglor | Makalaurë. Which is easier to see?
Or the fact that Curufinwë is attached to BOTH Feanor and Curufin; is that easier for the fans who aren't hardcore nerds?
And in your own example, the fact that both names are there means you can't easily search for after-Numenor Sauron fics because you're losing the signal that THIS fic is a Mairon fic and not a Sauron fic. The people who are interested in a Sauron fic are really quickly going to learn his other names. But expecting that of EVERY character in Tolkien's legendarium is really unreasonable.

Re: AO3
(Anonymous) 2016-03-01 01:08 am (UTC)(link)Tolkien fandom has spent decades shipping without this policy. Tolkien-specific sites like the Silmarillion Guild don't use it. Why can't AO3 listen to the actual Tolkien community, instead of catering to a handful of elitist fans? Because that's what they're doing and it is bullshit.
