I find tagging difficult sometimes because I don't want to use Tumblr-style tags and it drives me nuts when people do. But at the same time sometimes there is a tag that I think gets across something important in the fic, but it is a tag that doesn't exist. I don't like making up a new tag but sometimes you have to.

Yeah sometimes I come across something in my fic that I really think should be tagged/warned for, but doesnt have an existing tag and its like :/ I totally get the hate for tumblr tags cause stream of consciousness is so annoying, but there is a reason for non standard tags.

Exactly. That's the issue I have with my current fic. There are some tonal differences that I think I need to tag because the POV character is a villain who is in love with the other villain at the same time he's being creepy and awful to their victim. And I think readers need to know that there is both noncon stuff and consensual stuff at the same time. But there are no existing tags that get that across.

yeah making a tag for that shouldn't bother anyone

It's the "dad why were you and mom screaming in your bedroom last night?, Nana don't shove that up there!, Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar, surprise motherfucker" (real tags by the way) that irritate me. Seriously, they're not saying anything.

You are allowed to make new tags on AO3, that's the whole point of the system. I don't like an overuse of tumblr style tags as anon quoted above either, but restricting yourself to AO3's existing canonical tags goes against the original intention of the tagging system. It's meant to evolve. If the tag you need doesn't exist yet, just create it.

New/Non-standard tag isn't the same thing as Tumblr-style tags. The problem with them isn't that they're non-standard, it's that no one gives a fuck if you "feel like trash now uwu" over your fic.

This happens to me sometimes. I wanted to tag that characters used sweet nothings during sex, but "sweet nothings" and "sweet talk" were not already tags. I had to either pick "dirty talk," "pillow talk," or "sweet/hot," which just didn't quite cut the mustard.

AO3's existing tags aren't meant to be the only tags you can use. That's why you can create new tags. You didn't have to pick any canonical or pre-existing tag, you can just create the tags "sweet talk" and "sweet nothings".

As blitzwing said, there's a difference between a new tag and tumblr style tags. One is "sweet talk", the other is "[X] whispers sweet nothings into [Y]'s ear they're so cute OMG >//////<".
