The Wiz

(Anonymous) 2016-03-02 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Local dance company is doing The Wiz.

Local dance company is 99% white (at least all the characters in the ad appear to be).

Am I missing something, or does that defeat the purpose?

In my high school there was one black kid. No exaggeration.

My drama club still wanted to do The Wiz, because it's an extremely easy musical to adapt for that age group. It's fun, it's not too deep, it's got some really great numbers...

So yeah, we had an all white cast for that production. There were a bunch of lines that got left out, obviously, but there wasn't exactly anything we could do about it unless you wanted to put us all in blackface, since the one black kid in the entire school didn't even like drama.

No, it totally defeats the purpose. And its not like they didn't have a ton of shows to choose from that weren't written for black actors.

Is yours a mostly white area? If so, that sort of explain it. If not...yeah that is sort of weird.

If the area is mostly white? Then yeah, have a mostly white Wiz. I absolutely feel it should still be performed and enjoyed by people of all backgrounds. But in performing the play, I'd expect the dance company to explain the racial significance of the Wiz and hopefully educate the actors about its relevance to black theater.
