I don't particularly agree with what you're saying here (or maybe it's just that I don't agree with the vibe I'm getting due to the exact way you're saying it). However, there definitely is something to be said for knowing yourself and knowing where you stand on certain things. That's not a guarantee that your stance will not still be shitty. But if you take the time to think important issues through (often on repeat occasions) when you're calm and have the time and energy to give the matter the thought it deserves, you're a lot more likely to have a clear, reasonable perspective.

Which then allows you to respond more fairly and appropriately when that issue comes up. You'll be less likely to punch down.
