I'm guessing it's that you don't die of AIDS, you die of whatever disease your immune system is too weak to fight against due to AIDS.

I suppose so, but does that mean your death certificate reads "Died of the cold" or would it be "Died of complications due to AIDS"

I would assume it would list the actual cause of death, like "lung failure" or whatever. "Died of complications due to AIDS" seems kinda wishy-washy to me. But I've never seen a death certificate, so.

At least what I would write when filling out the paperwork for an in-hospital death:
Died from respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia secondary to AIDS.
