Re: Politician RPF

Palin sighed as she stood on her porch. In the distance she could just make out the shores of the Russian coast. Longing burns in her chest.

It's on quiet nights like these that she finds herself thinking. Thinking of a place whose vastness dwarfed the wilds around her home. A place whose people were the first to get closer to the heavens than any before.

She feels like one of those stars now. Visible but remote.

Sarah had felt conflicted when first visiting Russia. America had instilled patriotic pride in her. It whispered that Russia was inferior and dangerous. That at best Russia could be an tenuous ally. Someone to cautiously shake hands with because the other was surely holding a knife. (Palin would reflect years later that the beat of nationalism in her heart neglected to mention America's hidden knives.)

When she left the carefully choreographed cermony welcoming politicians from around the globe, Russia had been waiting at the outer door. They had argued. This was not new for Sarah who frequently argued with America. What was different was how alive she felt as their discussion continued down the steps of the embassy, through the picturesque streets before settling in a bar when their toes and the tips of their fingers had gone numb with the cold.

A neat tray of twelve taster shots of vodka, recommended by the bartender and split between them melted any chills. Talk had shifted from politics to personal. They were surprised to discover they both love wrestling bears.

At the end of the night they are tipsy and laughing. Russia bids her farewell at the embassy's gate.

Over the next few years Sarah keeps an eye out for business trips to Russia, gaining an impressive number of frequent-flyer miles. They meet only a handful of times, but each is as delightful as the last.

If only things could have remained that way.

After a lovely evening walking the botanical gardens and discussing gun ownership rights, Palin returns to the embassy to find America standing outside her room.

"We just got a report from stateside" said America, looking tired but vindicated. "We have evidence that Russia is violating our agreement."

The next day is ugly. Accusations fly from both sides. Russia's failings. America's failings. Palin feels caught in the middle until Russia says something particularly nasty about America's colonialism.

After that, things are never the same between them. America is between them.

During their last private dinner together Sarah lays her cards on the table. She wants to be with Russia, but America is family. America will always come first.

She still sometimes dreams about the flash of hurt and longing in Russia's eyes before they collected themselves enough to respond.

Nineteen hours later she arrives home and breaks down crying in her kitchen, exhausted.

Palin is interrupted from her maudlin walk down memory lane when a tree branch cracks under the weight of snow.

Snorting at her self pity, she downs the finger of whiskey left in the glass and heads inside.

John McCain had been dropping hints about looking for a vice president. Sarah thinks she knows the person for the job.
