(Anonymous) 2016-03-03 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I do have a soft spot for The Star-Spangled Banner, but I think that mostly has to do with fond memories of high school marching band.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 12:10 am (UTC)(link)Edelweiss is a beautiful song, but is it that patriotic or is it more the context that makes it patriotic? It may be the national flower of Austria, but I don't know that just singing about a bald eagle is patriotic. Doing so in front of the invading nazi hoard? That's the patriotic part.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 02:46 am (UTC)(link)Which is pretty damn patriotic, just in a non-jingoistic, non-rah-rah-war way. I think you just have an odd definition of "patriotic."

It's not an old Austrian hymn; Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein made it up.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 02:48 am (UTC)(link)"Bless my homeland forever" isn't patriotic?
"Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever" isn't obviously about Austria's people/culture/land, not just the flower?
Patriotic =/= jingoistic or warlike.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 03:00 am (UTC)(link)Hey, I love this song, and I freaking ADORE The Sound Of Music. You're preaching to the choir here.
But other anon didn't seem to consider it patriotic despite that line, so I thought maybe the song having been created specifically for the story (as opposed to being an actual patriotic anthem created for the purpose of being patriotic) nullified the patriotism of it for them.
I don't know. Maybe trying asking them.

Have to listen to the Chinese one every time I turn on the TV too early for the news, 'cause I live in Hong Kong and the station always plays the Chinese national anthem before the news.
