inb4 disgusting anti-semiitc trolling!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Because everyone who doesn't support genocide hates Jews?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
right on schedule, i see.

Palestinians are Semites too, ya know,

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
The word anti-Semitism was literally invented by racist 19th century European scientists so they would have a scientific-sounding term to use in support of their racial theories about Jews.

The word has always, always referred to specifically to hatred of Jews. Palestinians also being semites makes that no less true.

Anon, chill the fuck out. People are allowed to criticize Israel. Quit trying so desperately hard to be a victim here.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt, but you sound butthurt.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
...says the person claiming anyone who criticizes Israel must ~hate the jews~ ok

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
there are plenty legitimate criticisms of israel to be made, but you're delusional if you think the topic of israel isn't often brought up for the purpose of giving people a socially acceptable way to spew anti-semitic rhetoric. this has been a problem on the left for years, it's not just limited to wanky liberal-skewing fandom communities like fandomsecrets.

Institutionalized racism =/= genocide.

This. I'm someone who would go as far as to compare Israeli treatment of Palestinians to South African Apartheid. But genocide? No.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's not an accurate comparison either, though. I'd link you to an article I came across a while back, written by a Jewish South African guy explaining why it's a bad comparison, but I can't seem to find the article in question.

There's a LOT of propaganda going around about Israel and Palestine, on both sides of the conflict. Much of that propaganda is exaggerated, making false assumptions or equivalences based on things taken out of context, or simply straight up untrue. For this reason I think we should all be highly skeptical of ANYTHING written about the conflict that wasn't written by an actual Jewish or Palestinian person.

I especially think people who aren't well versed in the history of it all should stay the fuck out of it, because most of the time they have no clue what they're talking about. (Not saying you're necessarily one of those people, but honestly, I think you might be if you think Israel = South African Apartheid is an appropriate comparison to make.)

In any case, it's a much more complex and nuanced situation than it's generally made out to be by people on both sides.

I wouldn't describe myself as Jewish but I was raised with Jewish holidays and going to synagogue. Trust me, there's a HUGE difference between being critical of the actions of a goverment and being against that government's religion. People IN Israel are allowed to speak out and they're not seen as self-loathing so can we stop with this assumption?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
No, Israelis critical of their government are not self-loathing, any more than Americans or Canadians or Brits critical of their country's governments are self-loathing.

Non-Israelis who spread misinformation about Israel, take any opportunity to bring Israel-bashing into discussions entirely unrelated to Israel, and use the ethically dubious actions of the Israel government as an excuse to fling racial slurs at Jewish people like Gal Gadot? Yeah, they're anti-Semites.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
(same anon)

And btw, Jews aren't just a religion; they're an cultural and ethnic group (or a collection of related ethnic groups, depending on how you look at it). Anti-Semitism is generally waaaaaay more about the ethnic aspect of Jewishness than it is about the religious aspect.
