The struggle is real.

Has anyone been following the Bowdoin College news?

In case you haven't, I'll summarize. At Bowdoin College, students who hosted a tequila party have been kicked out of their dorm. Because of noisy, drunken disorder, you ask? No, this punishment came as a result of drinking tequila while wearing mini-sombreros. This act of cultural appropriation was so dangerously offensive that two student government representatives face impeachment proceedings tomorrow for attending.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/party-culture/2016/03/03/fdb46cc4-e185-11e5-9c36-e1902f6b6571_story.html

Apparently the school held a photo booth event last year, in which they provided sombreros as props. This event, however, went unchallenged.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/rampage/wp/2016/03/04/bowdoin-update-on-facebook-school-flaunted-photos-of-alumni-students-in-school-provided-sombreros/

Offended students issued a statement of solidarity to those who had been traumatized by the tequila party. If you keep up with college shenanigans at all, it will come as no surprise that the statement also includes a list of demands.

http://students.bowdoin.edu/bsg/bsg/statement-of-solidarity-re-tequila-party/

Glamour magazine chimed in with their approval of the administration's actions to punish those involved, although they regret the lack of an accompanying dialogue about why this was so bad.

Your thoughts, FS?

Put your stupid culture war bullshit behind a cut so I don't have to scroll past a wall of it

That's my thought

Disproportionate retribution.

It's tacky, but 'you don't get to live here' is over the top.

No-one cares or has even heard about your uni's stupid issue. I know it seems big to you, there's a couple of articles bla bla bla it is tiny, no-one cares, you'll all forget in a month.

Re: The struggle is real.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I daresay it's not tiny to the students who just got kicked out of their home.

Yeah.

Or for another example, look at Milo - goes and complains to the President just because he lost his blue checkmark, lol. Just another whiny baby.

Yeah, my first thought was, "Kids these days party?" Seems like that would cut into valuable time that could be spent feeling victimized.

You're leaving out two very important pieces of information.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-03-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Which isn't surprising, as you appear to be the anon who's an anti-SJW pearl-clutcher oh a college administration was stupid about a thing civilization is collapsing around us

Anyway.
1. Were students underage? That is, did someone underage get into the party, because at a dorm in the US this can result in everyone especially the hosts being disciplined. Nothing mentions this. It's generally a really bad idea to have any kind of booze-themed party in a dorm.
2. Impeachment by a student government body isn't punishment by the school. That's what makes it student government.

You also fail to note that these links ain't news. They're opinion columns. But this is probably where you get your news anyway so I'll let it slide. Wouldn't wanna trigger ya with factchecked journalism.

Re: You're leaving out two very important pieces of information.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
1. None of the reports mention underage drinking.

2. It's punishment nonetheless, and you glossed over the dorm eviction.

Bangor Daily News has a report here:
https://bangordailynews.com/2016/03/04/news/midcoast/report-bowdoin-students-face-punishment-for-stereotyping-at-tequila-party/?ref=comments

The school's newspaper report is here:
http://bowdoinorient.com/article/11027

And you can call me as many names as you like, dear. Unlike college students, I can take it. :)

Who exactly was offended that they wore sombreritos? I'm confused.

Re: The struggle is real.

I feel there is probably more to this story than is being reported It always seems to be the case with political correctness gone mad accusations that the allegation of political correctness gone mad sidesteps or ignores another underlying central and more key issue.

No listen some people wrote some opinion columns that perfectly lean into our preconceptions so I think we can call this one a wrap

Re: The struggle is real.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
OP here, and I agree there has to be more to the story. Apparently this is the third in a string of ethnically-themed parties, so I'm guessing tensions are high.

There's an authoritarian bent to the social justice movement that makes people want to rebel against it, because they don't like being told they can't do something. But the more they rebel, the angrier the offended parties become because they now see it for what it has become - an attack. It's a difficult situation all around.

Why do parties even need to have a theme?

Re: The struggle is real.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
You're glossing over some stuff there dude. They did a Thanksgiving party where students came in warbonnets and "red face" and when admonished said they wouldn't do that again. Then pretty shortly after they did an event encouraging blackface, where they said sorry and they wouldn't do anything like that again. Then they did an event where people got invited to act like stereotypical Mexicans, and when they tried to say sorry and they wouldn't do it again got told to stuff it. Three strikes, they're outta there.

Re: The struggle is real.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Don't see why any of that would matter to OP

Secretly, I always knew this day would come.

On a side note, I own a sombrero. Mom bought it when she and Daddy lived in Albuquerque. I always wore it for hat day at school.
