I agree it's a very cliché, stereotypical, worn-out joke.

But, and maybe I've just been lucky, in my experience women's restrooms are pretty clean. I don't think I've ever seen more than a glimpse of the men's restroom, but the filthiest public toilets I've used have been unisex ones. Mostly though it depends on the establishment: if one bathroom is clean, the other will be too.

Also, and this is an honest question: what does having a period have to do with it? The only evidence I've ever seen are tiny trashcans or those paper bags to get rid of your used pads or tampons. I've never seen anything remotely disgusting that was period-related. Have I been that lucky?

Same. The grossest things I've ever seen in women's bathrooms have been when some graceless slob jams a bloody pad into the little receptacle without rolling it up and wrapping it in toilet paper. But I've never seen menstrual blood splattered around, and rarely see pee on the seat.

Once, though, I did see a shit the size of a mortadella that someone had failed to flush. I actually leapt back in alarm, that thing looked like it could lunge at me.
