While you're correct about double standards, the real truth is for every women's bathroom I've seen that was a filthy hole, there were three men's bathrooms that were portals into nightmare realms, populated by cackling devils swirling like shrieking bats around a jutting spire of obsidian, arcane runes carved into its curiously warm surface (and sometimes also swastikas and dickbutts.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think the only inaccurate thing here is that there isn't a line going out the door in the women's room.

I'd like to invite the artist to spend a few days in the dorm restrooms at my (women's) college. I think he might change his mind.

OP, as someone who worked as a janitor for a few years... It's kind of accurate. Not to those extremes.

There's loose toilet paper floating around in the womens and usually not any shit on the floor in the mens. They both have vandalism, oddly enough the men's seemed to trend to dicks (+ smartass comments) and women , while the women's would be "true love" and uplifting quotes (+ smartass responses).

Period evidence usually only occurs if the bins are full. Shit for both sides generally signfies someone had a major physical or emotional issue and you grit your teeth and pretend not to see it.

Teenagers of both genders like to throw wet toiletpaper onto the roof. The mens does smell more, because of the urinals.

It's also not true. I briefly worked at a place that had no women's bathroom specifically (me, and the cleaning lady that came in twice a week were the only women who worked there). So, essentially it was a men's bathroom (just with two women occasionally using it). When I started working there, I feared horror scenario's like this, but I've never known it to be filthy in the 6 months I worked there.

Transman here:

In my 20 odd years pre transition, I've seen some real shit in the women's restroom. Like, literal shit in the middle of the floor.

On average the only thing different about the men's room is that the counter is significantly more likely to be completely covered with water and you have a slightly increased chance of urine on the seat. But REALLY not as much as you'd presume, since cis girls do that hover and pee bullshit.

Otherwise they're about the same in terms of cleanliness, and I use public restrooms a whole hell of a lot.

Sort of related, it took me so long to figure out why guy make jokes about girls going to the toilet together. Until I walked into the wrong toilet by accident I didn't realize that the urinals made it awkward to talk.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I agree it's a very cliché, stereotypical, worn-out joke.

But, and maybe I've just been lucky, in my experience women's restrooms are pretty clean. I don't think I've ever seen more than a glimpse of the men's restroom, but the filthiest public toilets I've used have been unisex ones. Mostly though it depends on the establishment: if one bathroom is clean, the other will be too.

Also, and this is an honest question: what does having a period have to do with it? The only evidence I've ever seen are tiny trashcans or those paper bags to get rid of your used pads or tampons. I've never seen anything remotely disgusting that was period-related. Have I been that lucky?

Whoever drew this has obviously never been in the women's restroom before.

Fun experiment for the whole family: go to your closest middle school and venture into the girls' room. Make sure not to get arrested!

Eh, while female bathrooms can be gross, I've never gotten the "ugh all women's bathrooms are filthy hell holes!!" hysteria I've seen from some groups of people.
When I was in grade school, the worst you would ever see in a women's bathroom was some stray period blood and unflushed toilet. The guys restrooms constantly had shit covering the walls and toilets overflowing.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
There were some nasty girls' restrooms when I was in high school. One person (or several) was obsessed with balling up paper towels and toilet paper, stuffing it all into the toilet and then flushing until the whole restroom was flooded.

I've also seen poop on the floor... why, I don't know, unless it was for the same reason as the deliberate flooding.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
You could be right, but you're wrong. Men's toilets are filthy. I hate mixed gender facilities: there's often pee even up the walls.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I used to help volunteer before I moved, and part of them involved cleaning bathrooms.

I have never run into tampons thrown about, pads stuck to walls, or anything of that side for the women's, but I have had to bend to scrub urinals, with the disgusting scent of piss in the air because the guys couldn't aim and hit the walls and it permeated the whole place until even bleach couldn't get it out.

And on a scale of bathrooms, this one was on the cleaner side. No disgusting graffiti, no exploded toilets.

In my experience there are two differences between men's and women's restrooms.

1) urinals

2) the swastikas in the women's room are drawn with menstrual blood

No offense to OP, but most of the male bathrooms I've been have had certain aspects of that comic

I've seen piss on the floor, unflushed turds, swastikas, a message that said 'If you want an amazing blowjob, be here on [insert same day I was in the bathroom here]', and most disgusting of all, a toilet where someone had clogged it with a scarf, then pissed and shit in the same toilet

...Though to be fair, most of this is just my experience from community college

I've been a janitor. They're about the same cleanliness-wise.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
My impression is that women's restrooms can be gross or ill-kept, but women at least make a concerted effort not to filthy the place up unnecessarily. Sometimes men seem to act like being gross or filthy is masculine or funny. That it would demean them to actually (gasp) clean up after themselves! A little of that goes a long way to making a place disgusting. But, I have seen in the women's restroom where people don't even bother to flush their disgusting poo, so we're not all little angels, either!

I feel like this is perpetuated by people who have only been in the men's room.

I used to be a cashier and one of my duties was to clean the bathrooms before closing up. The men's and women's rooms were about the same on average, maybe the men's room was a little grosser on average, but not that much. In general the men's room had some messes almost daily, and the women's room was more likely to be very clean, but when there was a mess in there, it was a MESS.

I cleaned up a lot of shit (literal and figurative) but I refused to open the canister with blood all over the inside and clean that out. I was making minimum wage and I was not getting paid enough for that.

Yeah, this is such a stale joke.

It varies from place to place, but I've been forced to stick to the men's room exclusively at some places because the smell just going in the ladies' room door was so bad you'd actually gag.

Whoever illustrated this ought to come see the restrooms in my neck of the woods.

In women's restrooms, I have seen:

-Toilet paper on the floor
-Piss on the seat
-Shit smeared on the seat
-Shit sprayed on the inside of the bowl, just above the water (explosive diarrhea)
-menstrual blood in thick clots in the toilet (by itself)
-menstrual blood trickling down the side of the toilet bowl
-piss and shit on the floor
-a used adult diaper in the sanitary napkin bin
-"mystery stains" on the sink counter
-paper towels on the floor
-paper towels in the sink, fully wet
-food chunks in the sink
-a leftover fried fish lunch in the trash (which doesn't sound horrifying at first, but trust me, that is NOT a smell you want in a women's restroom)
-a sink faucet turned on halfway

So I don't think it's a sex thing. Humans are gross.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience it was usually the ladies room that was oh god gross disgusting. While men's bathroom was usually oh god the smell, but even then wouldn't be as gross as the ladies barring the occasional piss drops and the rarity of when some douchenozzle decides to take a shit in the sink.

Meanwhile in the ladies it would be piss all over the toilet seats, used tampons and pads not disposed of, clogged or unflushed toilets, and other garbage about.

I loathe queues and gender binaries, so I use the men's washroom a lot even though I'm a lady. And 9 times out of 10, the women's washroom is way worse. Women don't want their asses touching the toilet seat but by and large don't have peens with which to aim, and thus the piss ends up all over the floor. The men's is smellier but less random piss on the ground, in my experience.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I clean bathrooms at Wal-mart, and the women's bathrooms are always, always worse than the men's. That's not to say I haven't seen some gross stuff in the men's rooms, but 9/10 it's the women's that take a half hour to clean.
