I feel like you really don't get the point of the movie. The darkness was The Nothing. For the horse to feel absolutely nothing and give in was the whole idea.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Swamps of Sadness had nothing to do with The Nothing.

But I mean, I don't know what OP was expecting...The horse frowning and crying? That would've been dumber. He looked genuinely distressed to me, probably why a rumor started that the horse died during filming.

The horse didn't die, but was legit distressed in that scene. He was on an elevator going down into the mud, and literally couldn't move due to the thickness of it. The elevator broke down and he got stuck--the actor wasn't in much better shape, but at least the actor understood what was happening, where the horse didn't.

I always wondered how they did that scene. I hope the elevator didn't break while he was totally submerged.
