I really should rewatch, but as a kid it nearly traumatized me.

This is bait. And I'm hooked.

This is one of a handful of scenes in childhood movies that could be used to test the emotional intelligence of an AI, dude. If you're not affected in the least, you're still just a toaster.

I would say hysterical laughter is a reaction. Just not the one you're looking for.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Acting like every fictional scene is objectively sad and nobody can not be affected is one of the most obnoxious nerd arguments.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
no, I don't really care about horses- the same way most people watching a snake die would not care

I never had a very strong reaction to it either, but I didn't see Neverending Story until I was in my late teens. So the whole film was never as special to me as someone with a childhood experience. Same with Legend.

But LABYRINTH. Labyrinth fucked me up royally. I'm convinced that the fire gang's eyeball thing is the origin of my gigantic eye squick. Eyeballs out of bodies, injuries to eyes, and even touching them (closeups of people putting in contacts, for instance). Nope nope nope.

You have offended so many childhoods, lol.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like you really don't get the point of the movie. The darkness was The Nothing. For the horse to feel absolutely nothing and give in was the whole idea.

NOOOOOOO The horse was the only dead I cared about in that movie. Everyone else can go suck a thumb for all I cared.

Eh, animals are seldom good actors. A cat-loving reviewer of bad horror films notes that she'd seen plenty of scenes where, despite the soundtrack being a frenzy of hisses and yowls, the body language of an onrushing group of cats was obviously saying "Oh, the clicker's over there! I'm running to the clicker, give me my treats!" (primarily by their ears and tails being in the upright 'happy' position, rather than ears back and tails down/fluffed out)

Similarly, this picture of a dog in HR Giger-designed armor: ominous though it may be, the dog's face is all "The people must've put me in this for a good reason! I hope I get treats!"

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
should possibly mention that I was 25 years old and drunk off my ass when I first watched this movie. Which may have affected my sentiments somewhat. But I have a hard time taking anything seriously where a prepubescent child is The Mighty Hero Whom Everyone Treats Like A Mature Adult. Also I never felt like the horse was actually a character. Animals aren't the greatest actors sometimes.

Sort of related, but wasn't there an article about how the horse almost died during this scene, or am I thinking of something else?

You are probably a sociopath.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but since when were horses actors? Did you want them to actually hurt the horse to get a fearful reaction out of him?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, anon.

Although for me, it's not the horse (which is, you know, a horse, and it's a good thing it's not in real distress) so much as the fact that the kid isn't really a great actor, so it comes across more ridiculously hammy than heart-wrenching.

I'm sure it's sad if you're really engaged in the movie, but if you're not, the acting is really laughably bad at some of the key emotional points.

I admit that this secret reminds me of the scene in The Walking Dead where the horse gets eaten by zombies: It was oddly cute because the zombies were obviously horse trainers/handlers in zombie make up who spent the whole scene trying to both calm and pet the horse while pretending to eat it.
