should possibly mention that I was 25 years old and drunk off my ass when I first watched this movie. Which may have affected my sentiments somewhat. But I have a hard time taking anything seriously where a prepubescent child is The Mighty Hero Whom Everyone Treats Like A Mature Adult. Also I never felt like the horse was actually a character. Animals aren't the greatest actors sometimes.

If all you get from the Neverending Story is this misconception of what the importance of the child hero was, just... just stop.

look, I hate badly made child heroes, and I hate boring savior tropes. THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS STORY IS.

Bastion and Atreyu's story is completely mixed together in the film, but it's utterly BASTION's story. It's not ABOUT being the one hero, savior of all. It was never just about the destruction of a fantasy landscape - it was about protecting the joy and imagination within himself after his mother died and everyone else is trying to suck his few bits of refuge out of him. It's a love letter to the joy of reading.

I'll grant you this much - the movie fucks up the message somewhat in comparison to the novel, but it's still a lot of fun.

I think the book gets the idea of Artax as a character across better, as I think (I'm not absolutely sure on this, it's been a long time since I read the book) that he could speak and thus was more of a friend of Atreyu's.

Honestly I don't recall feeling a lot about that scene either when I first watched the movie, and mind you, I watched the movie in the cinema, in the 80s. Then again I also was not upset by Optimus Prime dying either, but I had not formed an attachment to him so... *Shrug*

On the other hand, I also can't watch "The Neverending Story" now because it's old, the special effects are dated, and I have read the book and can see where they changed things around, and despite seeing the movie years before I read the book, the book was the superior version.
