Being asexual doesn't mean you can't ship characters sexually, or romantically, or any old way. Same way you don't have to be homosexual to have homosexual ships. What you're describing IS shipping, just not a sexual version, and plenty of fanworks exist of that nature. Domestic AUs are definitely a thing in a lot of fandoms, for example.
