I feel really comfortable when people say 'I love you' to me. Doesn't matter if it's a character from a video game or my mum, I will internally cringe and feel about the same as if they'd said 'You're a piece of trash and I hate you'. I have no idea why.

I kind of have this problem too. But my reason for that is I often got told 'I love you' by someone who used to say things like 'You're a piece of trash and I hate you.' So even though I didn't realize, subconsciously I would think, 'Well, how can you say you love me when you treat me like shit?'

I'm not trying to say it's weird to say you (in general) love someone. I just think it really should be reserved for people you actually love (backing it up with behavior and actions).

Err, I guess that's going a bit off topic, though.

No, that actually may be related to why I feel that way. The first time I can remember someone telling me they love me was a close family member telling me that I'm an ungrateful brat who doesn't appreciate the way my family loves me. I'm hesitant to think it affected me that much because I don't think that person was actually abusive, they said it when they were really mad and I was a rebellious teenager. But that's what I think of whenever anyone tells me they love me.

I'm pretty sure I've only had that said to me once. It was my dad and I was having a rough time. It completely shocked me. We're not that kind of family (or culture, even?) and my dad definitely wasn't. It was so unexpected. I had no idea what to do or say.

I always knew my family loved me, but hearing someone say it...That's why I sometimes say it to my cat. To practice, so that it's easier if I one day want to say it to a person. It feels silly, but I think it's a good cause.
