Watching Trump already convincing thinking, intelligent people that he's got a reasonable bone in his body and that he won't be so bad as President - even while he's still running for the Republican nomination and is being as crazy as possible - is just... it's like slowly watching yourself go mad. This is how we're going to elect the fucker, and it feels like there's nothing that I can do to change it, and it's so awful to watch. Every time I hear it from someone I go a little more crazy.

Ted Cruz scares the ever living shit out of me. Gun to my head, told to choose, I'm going to pick the guy who isn't a dominionist.

I'm not just talking about this thread, or people just saying they prefer Cruz over Trump. It's the people specifically talking about how he wouldn't be so bad in general, or moderates convincing themselves that Trump is somehow better than Clinton, or all of that things. It's bizarre, and like I say it's only going to accelerate if he starts shifting positions after he gets the nomination.

Fair enough.

I mean it's not like I'm gonna vote for either one, realistically. I'm just saying compared to a barely-constrained lunatic like Cruz I'll take the casino marketing campaign in a wig any day.

I think "leftists" have real cause to be concerned if Trump is the Republican nominee. There are a number of moderate liberals who are as fed up with the establishment that Clinton represents as conservatives are.

Not if Bernie wins the nomination. This is only a fear with a Clinton nom. One of the reasons I hope she doesn't get it.

Bernie will not win the nomination. Wake up.

Settle for Hillary!

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. I'm one of those moderate liberals, and I've had it with the authoritarianism in the left.

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. As long as you're aware that you insisting something is so, doesn't make anything true. Lots of states to go!

Re: politics

No, I agree with you there. This race could go literally anywhere.

"Bernie will not win the nomination. Wake up."
"This race could go literally anywhere."

What?

Yknow what, whatever, believe whatever you believe.

On the bright side for me, Bernie appears to be winning Maine right now!

My bad, I was talking about the Republican race.

I really do believe the Dem race is over. Bernie's ideas are too extreme for most Dems.

"Bernie's ideas are too extreme for most Dems."

Source?

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you miss the part where this thread was about opinions?

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I was asking for a source on which that opinion was based.

If there isn't one, you can say "no basis, but it's my opinion" without getting defensive, y'know.

"moderate liberal" is slang for "Republican's useful idiot."

Dude. I live in a red state. I might as well vote for Mickey Mouse.

That doesn't really have any bearing on what I said.

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Fine, if being a moderate equals idiocy, I'm an idiot.

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you admit to it!

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's a choice between inflexibility and idiocy, I'll take the latter.

Re: politics

(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I don't think anyone here had said that Trump would be a good President - or even that given a rational choice they would chose him. The question who would you chose between Cruz and Trump. And the people here who are saying Trump are not say it because they think Trump would a good choice, they are choosing Trump because they think that Cruz is even worse. Trump is a lot of things - but he is NOT a religious fanatic and he does not want to turn this country into a Christian theocracy. Now, while a lot of Trump's followers scare me, Cruz still scares me more.

Like I said above, I'm not just talking about people in this thread (that's why I replied to the general politics post, not just the question about Trump and Cruz specifically). I get that this is a conversation with a specific context and I'm sure there are good reasons for thinking Trump would be worse. But I do think there are a few instances where it seems like a comparable process of rationalization and minimization with regards to Trump.
