I was under the impression a vacuum caused things to blow, rather than sucked.

No, it is the air rushing in to try and equalize the pressure. That is clearly blowing rather than sucking.

That's just the definition of a vacuum. From the point of view of a stationary object, that object is being sucked rather than blown.

The object is not being sucked (pulled), it is being pushed by the air coming in behind it, so it is being blown.

If this is true, then why does the open end of a vacuum cleaner hose suck your hand flat against it? The air cannot be getting around your hand and pushing it, because your hand is flat against the hose and blocking its end.

I'm not an expert on vacuum cleaners, and for the most part you may be right. But I think I'd bet against you on this one.

I am with you on this. I don't care about the minute technicalities of how a vacuum works. Vacuum cleaners suck.
