He wasn't *always* mean to her, though, even though it felt more like a hostage situation when I read them (though you must excuse me, it's been some years).

But I seem to remember a panel where he's literally crying on her shoulder, similar to the composition in this shot (though completely different context).

Even comic book Al didn't take his shit a lot of the time. I'd say they were both meaner to each other, and there was a more obvious power imbalance, but given the screen time and where the were going with the characters, I think that would not have worked, or at least needed a lot more elaboration, and I don't think they wanted to spend 15 minutes of screen time on that.
