I think the way they handled the nastier aspects of DP's personality was pretty good all things considered. This movie was taking a fuckton of risks to begin with, and even with an R rating you can only go so far before you start to alienate mainstream moviegoing audiences.

+1

The levels of complete psychopathic jerkass Deadpool can reach in the comics just wouldn't work for the protagonist of a mainstream movie. Both because it would alinate the audience, and because a lot of it would come off a lot harsher in live action than it does in a medium that's known for stylistic exaggeration.

Yep. They struck a pretty terrific balance I thought.

I'm kind of glad about how they portrayed that relationship, actually. Making it snarky but somewhat softer deep down was one of the few "grounding" aspects of Deadpool's character. It helped you feel that maybe deep down he's not a total asshole, disaster of a person, because nothing else really indicated that. I don't mind snarky anti-heroes (or anti-villains or whatever) but I think it was a good choice to at least make Deadpool likable. I don't think the romance story alone was enough to make me feel like human, tbh.

I thought he's supposed to be a total asshole. It's easy to tell he's not a villain since he usually sides against him, but making him good deep down just makes him more generic.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
i actually thought they balanced everything very well.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind it! My only gripe with the movie was that I think they spent waaay too much time focused on the romance. Don't get me wrong, I still think their relationship was super cute, I just really didn't need to see so much of it.

She's blind, and he made her put Ikea furniture together - using picture instructions.

I'd call that pretty cruel. ;)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
That was pretty funny.

It's funny-cruel, which actually fits Deadpool really well.

Why is his head lumpy?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
He has cancer.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
:( Now I feel bad for calling him lumpy.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, he'd probably take it as a compliment.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, Karen. You can't just ask people why their heads are lumpy.

He wasn't *always* mean to her, though, even though it felt more like a hostage situation when I read them (though you must excuse me, it's been some years).

But I seem to remember a panel where he's literally crying on her shoulder, similar to the composition in this shot (though completely different context).

Even comic book Al didn't take his shit a lot of the time. I'd say they were both meaner to each other, and there was a more obvious power imbalance, but given the screen time and where the were going with the characters, I think that would not have worked, or at least needed a lot more elaboration, and I don't think they wanted to spend 15 minutes of screen time on that.

Is this a Joe Kelly thing? He didn't seem softened up from the Deadpool written by Duggan, but I have a big reading gap when it comes to Deadpool.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he starts out an asshole and but tries to be a better person.

Joe Kelly is probably the definitive Deadpool writer, if you're a fan I'd recommend checking out his run.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well the movie made me like him for the first time ever, so it probably wasn't as true to the comics as it could be. but i had a great time and loved Deadpool as a character.
