Re: Do Americans really not take off their shoes in the house?

Not all the time; and unlike a lot of other places it's rude to take off your shoes in someone else's house (unless they are from somewhere where this is a thing and they ask you to.) Like, yeah, most of the time I'm barefoot at home, but then, I'm in southern California and go barefoot outside, too, so the soles of my feet are often pretty dirty (this isn't typical even for down here, though, I'm just a weirdo who prefers to go barefoot everywhere.) Right now it's cold out; we had rain and hail today, so I have my boots on in the house. It's so rarely cold enough for slippers that I don't currently own a pair, although I'm about 10 minutes from filling a basin with hot water and sticking my bare feet in it. As for dirt, we have large patches of bare dirt in our yard (damn drought) and dogs. Keeping the floor clean is a constant and frequently futile struggle.

This southern Californian wears slippers indoors 95% of the year. Maybe it's my circulatory weirdness (feet always cold) or just that we have pretty nice carpets. I would occasionally wear my slippers outside to walk to the mailbox if it's dry outside, but that's it. And I dust them off before stepping back onto carpet.
