Personally I don't get the fear of tracking in germs on your shoes. Do you go around licking the floor? Do you refuse to touch anything that's been on the ground outside? (which I don't think is even that gross, actually)

You might have stepped in old dog poo without realising and you didn't get all of it off on the mat so now you're tracking it around your house for instance? Not something I find appealing at least.

I typically watch where I am stepping and I typically notice if I've stepped in something that gross. Besides I don't usually walk on grass and sidewalks are pretty easy to see, even without staring at them, if there's stuff on them that shouldn't be there.

I take it you don't have carpet? My house actually has white carpet. It's not a matter of simply "clean your floors more often" (and frankly, that seems like good enough a reason, why dirty your floors more quickly by wearing shoes?) it's a matter of me not wanting to shampoo my carpets regularly.

I do indeed have carpet. My entire apartment is carpeted except the kitchen and bathroom. For one thing, I have to ask what kinds of surfaces you regularly walk on that wearing your shoes on the carpet requires you to regularly shampoo it - if I track in a little dirt a regular vacuum takes care of it, and it's unavoidable anyway since the carpet comes right up to the doorway. But for another thing, I was talking about germs, not dirt, in the comment you replied to.
