Re: Do Americans really not take off their shoes in the house?

Some Americans take their shoes off in the house.

I personally don't. Because I don't like walking around barefoot on all the dirt and mud that's already been dragged in. Or on the crumbs that my dad leaves on the kitchen floor, or the scattered cat litter, and I don't like getting splinters from the wooden floors. And I just hate being barefoot, even indoors.

I guess I sometimes leave my shoes by the bed? Or somewhere else in my room.

OP, what country are you from, by the way? I know Japanese and Turkish people take their shoes off, but they probably aren't the only ones.

I can't think of any European country I've been to where it has been common to leave shoes on at home.

Germans do as well. Pretty sure the English get into slipper.

Really, it never occurred to me that people might not take them off, especially if there's a carpet and all.

OP here, I live in Canada (southern Ontario, specifically). That's part of the reason why it feels so strange to me, I guess, since we're neighbours and share so many other customs. The regional explanation a couple people have made here makes sense to me, though! Dirty slush is pretty impossible to avoid if you wanna go outside in the winter.

So if you know you're gonna be chilling at home all day, you put your shoes on anyway to avoid all the mess?

I put my shoes on when I'm getting dressed, so yeah. Actually, even if it's a weekend and I go downstairs in my pajamas before getting dressed, I put shoes on. I hate walking around barefoot. Of course, that's partly due to foot problems (plantar fasciitis, it makes it uncomfortable to walk with my feet flat, and if I do it too long, they start to hurt).

This comment confirms something I've always suspected deep down, but sincerely hoped was not true: Socks do not exist in America. Unbelievable.

Yes, socks exist. However, I do not like walking around in them and seeing the bottoms turn gray with dirt, and if someone has spilled some water (or any liquid) it will just soak through the sock.

If the bottom of your socks are turning gray when you walk around, you need to clean your floors more. Or you need to change your socks more.
