OP here, I live in Canada (southern Ontario, specifically). That's part of the reason why it feels so strange to me, I guess, since we're neighbours and share so many other customs. The regional explanation a couple people have made here makes sense to me, though! Dirty slush is pretty impossible to avoid if you wanna go outside in the winter.

So if you know you're gonna be chilling at home all day, you put your shoes on anyway to avoid all the mess?

I put my shoes on when I'm getting dressed, so yeah. Actually, even if it's a weekend and I go downstairs in my pajamas before getting dressed, I put shoes on. I hate walking around barefoot. Of course, that's partly due to foot problems (plantar fasciitis, it makes it uncomfortable to walk with my feet flat, and if I do it too long, they start to hurt).
