For me, it's partly because it's one instance of a more widespread and obnoxious attitude within fandom. The shipping police and finger-shaking moralists have as much perspective as a swarm of locusts. Fans who ship a dark or fucked-up character aren't going to appreciate being told they're supporting rape culture or enabling stalkers, thank you very much.

Also, most posters who insist that Snape is a textbook Nice Guy or that Lily "friendzoned" him and Snape "stalked" her either weren't paying attention to that narrative arc, demonstrate dubious reading comprehension, or are too busy grinding their axes to care about character complexity and authorial intent.
