And that would mean no fandom.
I can think of at least ten conventions that exist because they were started by people connecting on LJ, seeing that there was an audience. Plenty of fandubbing and fansubbing groups formed through the same means. Costume and wig companies for cosplay, translation groups for manga, localizers, Ao3... even fucking DeviantArt started out of people who came together ON LJ. Because of shipping.
Those kids don't even know what it was like to be a fan in the days before the heavy licensing and professional distribution of anime. The fact that they even get their Steven Universes and Korras and Adventure Times and whatever other fan culture startups is because of fandom. ...And fandom is this way largely because some really, really old fans decided they wanted a good place to talk about their Star Trek slash.

People still do research about what happened in the fandom aftermath of The Sorrows of Young Werther.
Re: Not like those other fans
Once LJ got off the ground, fandom, merchandising, and fan culture exploded in a five year period.
It's not to say it was a new thing, but the back then it was so underground it was hard to find out about. Now you just have to turn your head and a Hot Topic exists.
