A questions & advice thread

Mental Health Q

(Anonymous) 2016-03-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Do SSRIs ever lose their effectiveness?

Context: I started taking citalopram about a year and a half ago (19 months to be exact) and I found it really effective in curbing my depression and, to a lesser extent, my anxiety. However, I've been feeling really awful lately - the past month and a half or so - really the worst I've felt since I started on them, by far. It's the only time that I've felt close to how I felt before I started taking them.

On the other hand, it's been a really anxious couple of months for separate reasons as well, so it seems possible this is just something I need to work through. And I'm kind of reluctant to go to all the effort of trying to change drugs if it is something like that. So I figured I would see what you guys thought as a preliminary first step.

Sometimes your body can get used to a dosage, or maybe your dosage wasn't strong enough to begin with now that your body has adjust to a new element. Either way, talk with your doctor to see what they think. The first step is ALWAYS to ask your doctor before doing anything different with your medication.

Yes. It's common for people who are on medications longterm to have to go back to their doctor and readjust dosages, try new medications, etc. because the efficacy of them have changed. The preliminary first step IS to go back to your doctor and tell them what's changed with you.

Need advice on e-mailing a professor regarding a late essay

(Anonymous) 2016-03-09 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
So, I have had a pretty bad depressive episode for quite some time now, but I try my best to just go about my day which works to some degree. I usually have enough energy to get to my job and get to my lectures, but not much else, including writing essays. So I had a major one due today, and I just couldn't finish it on time. I'm still working on it and it's way too many hours past the midnight deadline and I'm now just hurrying hoping to get it done, hopefully before people start to wake up (I'm in Europe by the way). As soon as I'm done I'm going to e-mail it to my professor, and just hope he'll accept it. (Which is why I want to get done before he checks his e-mail, I feel like that'll make it a bit better)

Now what I really need advice on is what should I tell him? I don't know if I should be honest and air out my issues, or if I should blame it on some (fake) physical illness, forgetfulness, or just say that I won't come up with any excuses, but just hope that he'll be gracious enough to accept it. Do any of you have any experience with something like this? I honestly don't know how to present this, and if he doesn't accept it I will fail the class.

I'm honestly just a wreck right now and feel like such a dumbass :/

I've been there. This is what I wrote to them:

Dear Professor,

I am sorry to inform you that I will not have the assignment in to you on time. I have been struggling with mental health issues lately, which has prevented from operating at my best. I was hoping you would be able to grant me an extension so that I can do the assignment properly.

Sincerely,

X

It's short, sweet, and to the point. I'd also recommend looking into getting help from your school's disabilities office in case this happens again. <3

Thank you for the advice. It was something like that I was leaning towards, so hopefully it'll work (as I assume it did for you). Especially if I do manage to get it done before dawn.

I did work. All of my teachers have been very sympathetic and understanding. It helps to be forthright rather than making up excuses or flat out not doing the assignment. <3

Finished the paper and sent the mail, so now I'm just anxiously going to wait for a reply .__.

I used your previous comment as a template, so I have to thank you for that! It made it a lot easier than wording it completely by myself <3

Just got a response: "Thanks." That's all.

... I guess it went fine, but I feel a bit weird about now.

P.S. Having a mental illness does not make you a dumb ass. Because if it does, then I guess we can be dumb asses together! :D

Mrs. Don Draper speaks the truth. As a professor, I can tell you that short, sweet, and honest are the best ways to approach any issues you might be having in a class. When students have issues, I'll work with them. If they spend more time making up an excuse than they did working on their assignment, I don't cut them too much slack. But just so you know, most students have real issues, and teachers will work with that.

Hopefully my professor feels the same way! I've sent the assignment and the mail now, so now I'm just going to have to wait and see.

uwu

What is "uwu"? Does it stand for something or is it a face of some sort?

Urban Dictionary says it's a happy face. I think it's like closed eyes and a scrunched up smile???

I'm really glad you asked this, as I've always been kind of unsure about it myself. Whenever I see it, my brain thinks both "cute face" and
"uh-woo" in a cute voice, at the same time.
