Maybe it also has to do with accessibility? Let's be real, a lot of fans pirate stuff. While there are those huge manga aggregate sites where almost anything is accessible, as well as crunchyroll and whatnot, it might be that for some people getting their hands on this comic is just more difficult. Finding shows streaming is also very easy.
I know that I personally won't generally buy something without having read it first, considering how expensive comics get.

eta: remember international audiences, too.

I'm a non-US fan and I subscribe through Comixology. Also, it's easily available on pirate sites. It's an awesome comic and in trade it works out at a reasonable price, but it's true that issue-by-issue really adds up.
